Cost to trade up

If Miami is willing to deal and a QB we want is on the board at #3, we probably need to make the move. It'll probably cost us our 3rd this year and our 1st next year but as a class I'm way more sold on this year's class than next year's. Next year's looks like Sam Howell and Spencer Rattler with not much more to speak of.

spend a 1st and 2nd for wilson, or hang tight for lance. I'm ok with either. I think wilson will bulk up, and be a solid starter for a long time. Lance is more of a gamble, but has a higher potential upside. I trust our current staff to know if they can tap into that or not. I hope they can, and we can stay at 8 to get a future great.

Unless someone else falls in love with Lance’s arm and potential and they trade up ahead of us to grab him

Think Lance will be there at 8.  The other 3 will be gone.

Lance will sit behind Teddy for a year and learn.

This is the most logical move for the Panthers.  Then fill many other spots where we have needs without giving up the draft capital

The whole value chart goes out the window of a team trying to trade uo for QB

and that is why said its a starting point and QBs go at a premium.

A franchise QB is worth more than two first round picks, if that’s all it takes I’ll do it.

Easily

People just feel safer with the non-QB picks, but I do agree at some point you have to take a chance

I'm afraid its going to cost a bit more than that.  There are probably a handful of teams willing to give up next years 1st and a 3rd this year.

Also a lot will depend on how set Miami is on any one player.  If they fall in love with Sewell they could potential try to get a 2nd out of Atlanta.  Atlanta might do that if they think someone will jump them and if they really want one of the top-3 qbs.

Miami might prefer Sewell and a 2nd this year over a second this year and a first next.

What would Cincy give to move up two spots if they really like Sewell?  According to the chart that is an early 2nd or next years 1st.

Miami is in a really great spot and the more you look at it you realize its going to take a haul to move up from 8.

Lots of vets out there with their teams possibly looking at QB's.

Who might NOT be looking at a QB might be the easier puzzle.

  • Good Guys = Blue
  • Yellow = Will undoubtedly draft a QB
  • Red = Threat to draft a QB
  • Green = Potential Trade Up Target

Pick Team Needs
1 Jacksonville Jags QB, OT, CB
2 New York Jets QB, edge rusher, CB
3 Miami Dolphins WR, ILB, Interior OL
4 Atlanta Falcons Edge rusher, DB, QB
5 Cincinnati Bengals OL, edge rusher, CB
6 Philadelphia Eagles Interior O-line, CB, WR
7 Detroit Lions WR, DL, LB, QB?
8 Carolina Panthers QB, OL, CB
9 Denver Broncos CB, edge rusher, QB
10 Dallas Cowboys CB, OL, LB
11 New York Giants Edge rusher, CB, WR
12 San Francisco 49ers CB, OL, QB
13 LA Chargers OL, TE, CB
14 Minnesota Vikings OL, DT, edge rusher
15 New England Patriots QB, DL, WR

I doubt it would happen but you could also put Miami, Dallas, Philly, Giants and Vikings on the list.

Miami might not be sold on Tua.  Arizona drafted a QB shortly after drafting one in a previous year.

Dallas technically doesn't have a QB at the moment.

Philly might find a way to trade Wentz, apparently Wentz wants out.

Vikings always seem average, so they might try to change some stuff up.

Some people aren't sold on Jones with the Giants.

Really out of those 15 teams, only Cincy and Chargers are the only ones I would say are 100% not taking a QB.  All the rest you could make some argument for.

I think Wentz only said he wants out if he's not going to be the starter which is kind of wanting the obvious. It's not like Philly is going to pay him all that money to ride the pine.

I would say of everyone you listed, the Giants are the biggest threat.

Miami won't bail on Tua so early. They can build around him and he should get better next year, especially as he heals more from the Hip injury last year.

Jones is invested in Dak. Their season tanked the moment he went down. They know they need to pay him in order to compete. I don't see them letting him walk. If they do, they are definitely in the mix.

Philly has no way to trade Wentz that would relieve their Cap, and they just spent a 2nd on Hurts last season. They have too much capital invested in the QB room at the moment. If they add another, it would do absolutely nothing to help the team.

Vikings are stuck with Cousins and his contract, and honestly, he's not as bad as everyone thinks he is. Vikings' D was their issue this year, Captain Kirk was actually solid. 4k yards passing, 35 TDs and 13 interceptions (many either deflections off receivers or last second heaves). It wasn't during Garbage time either. We as a franchise would be thrilled to have him as our QB. He would make us competitive.

Giants - If Gettleman stays, so does Jones. If Gettleman leaves, it's probably 80/20 he stays/goes based on where they draft. They have a few more holes to fill throughout the roster and it would probably serve them better to get an edge rusher or WR than to draft another QB.

I would never trade next yrs first rounder

or this years 2nd rounder

thats a deal Marty would make

Next year's first is often the price of doing business in trading up for a QB. That what it cost the Chiefs to get Mahomes. Their 1st, plus a 3rd, plus their next year's first. Mahomes was not a 'sure thing' in that draft, but I bet they don't regret that trade one bit.

It also cost the Texans their next year's first to move up to get Watson. It hasn't worked out as well as Mahomes, but Watson is clearly a franchise level guy. I'd trade our 2021 No 8 pick for him right now but the Texans would laugh me off the phone.

If a QB is in the draft you believe can be a Mahomes or even a Watson, you pay the price and go get him.

But you better be right.
