News on Joe Brady

It reiterates my point that Brady doesn't want to find himself in a position where he has a very short resume of NFL experience and a terrible first HC gig.  That's what happened to Chud.

I don't think Brady is a "Chud," but I hope he wouldn't find himself in the same situation.  It's just something I would consider.

Sure, you go ahead and pass up a job that has about 10 openings worldwide per year, pass up a 1,000% pay raise, to ponder if you can actually do the job that you are being hired to do while being in the ego soaked world of the NFL.

If you are a great offensive or defensive mind, you will continue to get jobs, even if you took a HC gig at the Bengals and it went up in flames, if you are good, you can work.

You can work, but do you ever get that HC opportunity again.  You'll have to work and be successful for more than a couple of years to get another opportunity.

I also wouldn't use Seifert as a comp because what happened after his stint in Carolina?  He was pretty successful riding Walsh's coattails in SF, but on his own in Carolina his goose got cooked.

Capers, Fox, and Rivera all had successful stints as coordinators and head coaches and were given another chance.  They weren't one year wonders.

To each, their own.

Brady is a smart guy, he won't just take any HC job offered.

Falcons were one...

#Panthers OC Joe Brady, a bright up-and-coming offensive mind, received requests from the #Falcons, #Texans, and #Chargers to interview for their vacant head coach jobs, source said. A new name into the HC mix.

It is a bit surprising that the panthers didn’t require at least a 2 year contract

Maybe teams believe all the red zone issues are on the QB, the QB he wanted

so, after one year, panthers may lose key components of their offensive staff

It would be super risky, but if Brady is confident in his own abilities but self aware enough to realize that he may not be ready, I could see him potentially doing it.

I guarantee you that Josh McDaniels kicks himself every damn day over spurning the Colts though. Even if he has a back room handshake deal with the Pats to takeover when Belichick retires, he's still going to have to keep earning it. If he can't get that offense turned around, the Pats very well may rethink that back room deal when Belichick hangs it up.

Eh, I think it's all agent and GM kabuki theater.  Brady's lack of experience could drive down the price for other candidates.  "We could get Brady for 60% of what you're asking for Coach Retread"  Or on the flip side, his agent could leverage the hot next thing and demand a high price.  If he doesn't get it, he swoops in with Coach Retread at a lower amount, albeit higher than what he would normally command.   Regardless, I don't think the play is linear.

I just don't think that guys like that (ego soaked) think that they can't do it, especially with a little help from their "friends".

If anyone offers him legit HC money, he's gone, no matter the situation.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
