Matt Rhule “We have to move to get younger offensively in the draft” AKA O line will be a focus

Think about Rhule's coaching style--it is funny that he would phrase it that way (sure is opposite of Rivera). Rhule is a coach that motivates through loyalty to him and each other.  He thrives on emotion and educating players.   Veterans that are in it for the money are not his people.   So, goodbye Okung, Reed, Paradis, Miller--and possibly Bridgewater.  I get the feeling that Bridgewater is a "one trick, one speed pony, " and Rhule knows that we are not moving forward.

When Bridgewater talked about making the playoffs with 14 completions, that tells me 2 things (pyschologically):

1. Sure I said I need to get better--we all do--but I am OK with 14 completions and in the past, it has been good enough.

2. Making the playoffs is my goal.

Liam Eichenburg (OT) should be a main target in R2.  Or Creed Humphrey (C/G)  if he drops somehow.

It's possible they'll both be long gone by our 2nd round pick tho

Love both players--

Creed gives us a way to get out of $10m or so in Paradis' contract.  I have seen Liam E. from first round to 5th round in mocks.  I watched him vs. UNC and wanted him here at the end of the game.

I don't want to throw out baseless innuendo, but are we have a certain player who has missed a lot of time down the stretch with some injuries that you generally see a lot of guys play through...

I'm not saying Rhule was throwing some shade toward CMC, but I'm also not completely certain that he wasn't.

I think they gave CMC off to give him a year to save his legs after playing as much the previous two years so he could or would have some trade value after next year.  Plus CMC could have been more cautious about COVID than most players.

Honestly, that's what I think too. But I'll be honest reading those comments, the first name that came to mind about the toughness,  not lasting down the stretch, etc. was CMC. It very well may not have been intended, but damn if it didn't fit like a glove.

Well the later in the season we saw him not make those one yard gains as he did in the first half of the season.  I think by season end he was tried and worn out, plus with the offensive line being as banged up in the 2nd half of the season the last two years it was hard to give protection and run block.  Left Tackle was a bust for us the past two years since Little doesn't seem to be destined to be the LT of the future any longer.  They might give him a try somewhere else but the lack of play and not hurt is a bad sign.

First name that came to mind for me was Okung, actually.

Despite just signing Bridgewater in 2019, Carolina can actually save $3 million by trading or outright releasing the QB this offseason. It's also possible he returns to compete for the team's starting job. The Panthers own the eighth overall pick in the 2021 draft and could look to target one of this year's top QB prospects.

is this true?....we can SAVE $3m by trading or releasing teddy???

Yes and no.  We would save $3M over having him on the roster, but he would still count as $20M in dead cap.  Essentially you would have $3M of cap space to replace him.  The following year we save $21M and his dead cap is only $5M.

That's why people have been saying his contract structure is basically two years with a lesser chance of the third year actually taking place.

I want to over-analyze that comment, because sometimes we mean to say one thing, but we tip our hand.

If Rhule is expecting to have the capital to get a QB in the draft, he is going to have to be prepared to move up.  To do that, needs are going to have to be addressed in free agency.  But we have no money!  Refer back to the comment about getting younger.

1. We are not going to renew the $13m we paid semi-retired Okung.

2. Cutting KK Short post-june 1 saves the franchise $14.5m

3. Cutting Paradis post june 1 saves the franchise $8.5

4. Cutting Weatherly pre june 1 saves the franchise $6m

5. Cutting Greg Little post june 1 saves the franchise $1m

6. Existing Cap Space $16m

So basically, we have $20m available to sign free agents before June 1, and after June 1, we can create another $24m--after free agency.  This is why the CMC deal was ill-timed, in my opinion. It eliminates the ability to sign Moton and Samuel.  Hurney loves him some RBs.

Currently, we do not have a starting LT, LG, or RG--and we have not signed Moton.

Miller (age 28 next year)  made $4m. Okung (age 33) made $13m. Paradis (age 32) made $9m. Reed (age 29) was at $1.5m.  Moton (26) is slated to make about $15m.  Was he referring to this?

We should be able to sign who we want in 2021. First year contracts are always cap friendly. You could sign Moton and Samuel for a combined cap hit of less than 12 million in 2021. Now in subsequent years it will be significantly more.  But look at Bridgewater's contract it is 3 years for 60 million but the cap hit is only 14 this year. If it were a 4 or 5 year contract the signing bonus is spread out longer lowering the cap hit for year 1 even more. I know that is short term but the idea we can't keep Samuel and Moton is not true.
