Yep. People kept saying we did a good job with little or no cap and that we had so much dead cap but honestly, more than half of our dead cap and IR cap was from new moves like Weatherly, not releasing Short before 2020, Apple, Roberts, etc.

We could have had $80M+ in extra cap in 2021 had we released Short, not signed Teddy, traded Turner for a pick (even a day 3 pick) to not take on Okung for 6 games, and not signed Weatherly, Apple or Roberts. The net on the team would have been that we were 4-12 had pick 3, had $80M+ more cap to rollover, a 3rd round comp pick and two more 5th or 6th round comp picks (we should get one).

Marty fubar’d the future for probably one more win with that collection of garbage he added. I mean with all that extra that we could have had, we’d be on our way to competing in 2022 with a bunch of young OL, not losing any of our young core, a rookie QB, gobs more young talent and money to sign a couple high profile FAs.

This....perfectly explained.

Only way he does is if Slater looks good, and I mean really good at the combine. Some reports have had Slater ranked ahead of Sewell, even though he took the year off because of covid. If, and that's a big if, Slater gets taken at 5, and Sewell is there at 8, I think we have to seriously consider him UNLESS the QB we wanted all along is available. We cant afford to reach for a QB because we're desperate and make a desperation pick based on hope.

The big issue with Slater is arm length, if he checks in around 34(no less), he could go before the panthers pick. If hes a T-rex, he'll get the OG treatment. Plus hes NFL short too, but is great on about everything else. Combine is key for him, if he checks in at 6'01 and 32 arms, rip millions. I looked at pics and feel like his arms will check in short for OT, and if that happens hes no Nelson OG either. Also hes living off handling Chase Young, thats 90% of his hype right now.

If, and only if we don't draft a QB.

- Trade back from to 8 to somewhere between 12-15.  In this trade add another 2nd round pick.

- Draft Darrisaw or Slater in the 1st

- Use one of the 2nd round picks to draft a center, Creed Humphrey, Josh Meyers, or Landon Dickerson. If you think one will be there in the 3rd round, then that's fine too.

- Sign Joe Thuney to play LG, he is very good. Having Thuney between two rookies at LT and Center is like having a coach on the field for the youngsters. Thuney has also played some center for the Patriots, could really help a rookie center. Brandon Scherff would be my backup option, unless we can sign both

- Resign Moton

Darrisaw/Slater

Thuney/Scherff

Humphrey/Meyers/Dickerson

Scherff/Reed

Moton

That’s ONE(or TWO) 14M/year OGs. How are the Panthers paying for this?

Just looked to see, Sportrac does have value of Thuney at 13.9M and Scherff are 11M

Not sure of our cap, but I would rather pay one of these guys than resign Okung who just made 16M to sit out games.  Also, I know we can create some cap by letting KK go.  Another thing to consider, with the league wide cap coming down, how many teams can afford to pay top dollar, and how does that affect the actual offers

Okung isn’t a part of the figures. He’s already gone. Any room created by KK will have to go towards Moton. 18M for all the holes and a draft class. There are teams with much more space than that.

Almost everyone on the oline has expiring contracts besides Paradis . What moves would you make to the oline ?

Would you resign any of the current dudes ? Which ones ? Which positions would you  draft or get another fa?

When asked about his team’s execution: “I’m in favor of it.”

After drafting a QB in round 1,

  • draft a LT in round 2. (Best available) Re-sign Scott.  He should be cheap and will not draw much interest.
  • draft a C in round 3. (Myers, Ohio St, for example)  Release Paradis after June 1. Bring Tecklenberg off PS to compete. Re-sign Reed ($1.5m and have him compete at C, depth at G)
  • Daley penciled in as LG.  (Reed depth)
  • Re-sign Miller (about $3-4 m)  Bring Horton off PS and let him compete/depth
  • Re-sign Moton.  Scott is depth
  • Get some TEs that can block AND catch a football. (Iowa St/Ohio St in later rounds--Thompson was a nice signing.)

This is about as good as we can do; we will be young and should improve, but there will be growing pains.

Free agency is contingent on keeping Moton.  Priority uno.  I would much rather bite the bullet and give him a contract than franchise tag him.  In the draft I have targets.  Cosmi, Darrisaw, Leatherwood and Carman guys I like.  Center is gonna take some development and I hope they can evolve quickly to usurp Paradis.  I like some guys who are not high round guys.  James Empey of BYU, Michael Saffall of CAL and Drake Jackson of Kentucky.  If the value is there I am not opposed to 3 to 4 picks on the oline.

Forcing certain positions in certain rounds and expecting them to be any better than average is a recipe for wasting draft picks.  Odds are Paradis is going to be better than any center you draft in the 3rd round during their rookie season.

The vast majority of picks after the first round will be no better than replacement level.

Re-sigh Moton

Re-sign Okung if the price is right.  If we wanted a rookie LT we should have drafted one last year.  Should always draft tackles a year before you need them.

Re-sign Scott and Miller if cheap

Center:  Keep Paradis for now.  Draft one if the value is there.

Guard - Look for a cheap vet as an upgrade.  There are always some guards that get released in the offseason to save cap.

I've said it before but I think a team should often look for guards in the mid rounds, they seem to be easier to find there than other positions.  Just don't expect them to better than what you have their first year.  If you commit to drafting them often they will be ready when needed.

How many guards have we drafted in the last 5 years?

How many o-lineman total?  Little, Moton, Daley?

At some point you have to throw some picks at the position.  Think about those picks we used to move up to draft other guys, or the comp picks we left on the table.
