can anyone prove that a sports franchise has ever purposely lost games to have a higher draft pick?

We should have totally blatantly tanked like some of the mouth breathing fanbois wanted. Seems to be working out so well for the Eagles locker room.

LOL. This is sad coming from you, but expected. #winningcultureoverlife. Anyway, if he would've started whatever that was in the 4th quarter from the beginning no one would've cared. That's still tanking too, by the way. But, the fact the game was close and he benched Hurts for him in the 4th quarter, it was a bad, bad, look.

They do it. It's just way slicker than what he did. I don't think he thought the game was going to be that close. Regardless, he should've just had whatever the hell that was start from the get go.

He needed to leave in his second stringer who was doing very well. If for no other reason then how it affects the division and other teams. If the Giants and Philly had reversed roles I guarantee you Philly fans would be going nuts.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Did you see the starters that were on the injury report to start the game? It was worse than the Panthers. LOL.

@GOAT We both want to win and watched plenty of ball. The list of NBA teams is the whole dam league. NFL is harder to prove but Tampa Bay, Colts, and recently Philly shown tanking. Tampa bay had a 20-7 lead in the 4th and pulled their starters. Colts did all they could to lose and owner said thats no mystery they are picking Luck, before the the draft. Philly pulled players and had questionable play calling, Cardinals did too. They had a 3rd and 18 and Murphy was limping out, called a option type of play.

My deal is playoffs, I believe the only goal should be playoffs. Being realistic here, love to win the superbowl and you can only do that by making the playoffs first. Once the panthers are mathematically eliminated, I want to maximize the draft capital.

I answer yours, now in return answer this.

Panthers had the opportunity to draft 3rd overall if miracles happened. Or 15th with a win.

Be honest which would you rather have -

Panther 5-11 record

Picks

3

35

67

100

134

169

218

OR

Panthers 6-10 record

15

47

80

117

155

192

230

Rhule should have just played all the third stingers from week 1. Tank baby!

When the coach makes decisions and calls to throw the game, that is a different thing.

The negative ramifications for "throwing" the game are exactly the same regardless of when the decision/s to do so is/are made.

Only low/no character individuals/franchises would even consider taking that path...

No they aren't. The Saints laughed their collective asses off when we beat them week 17 and they rested all their starters for the playoffs. They didnt play their best players trying to win. And not only did losing not hurt them, by letting us win, they hurt our draft position which in turn helps them. They won by losing.

Not putting your team in the best position to succeed intentionally for a game. Theres a word for that. TANKING.

Enough is enough, I posed this question in another thread but feel the need to challenge this to the entire forum.

Can anyone provide info pertaining to a sports franchise purposely losing games to improve their draft position?

I'm even expanding this to other sports, I cannot think of a single time when a team obviously lost games in order to improve their draft positioning.

I don't believe that this is a real strategy and if that is the case, this weird fan fueled theory needs to be put to rest once and for all.

(BONUS: if you can provide an example of a team doing this, please include how this improved their team in the long run ie Rhule mentioning the Sixers believing in this method and it getting them nowhere...)

This aged well. The eagles

Cleveland absolutely 100% tanked to get Lebron.

Funny how people say that tanking doesn't work in the NFL but are willing to entertain it in the NBA. Hell, tanking in the NFL is GUARANTEED. There's a concrete draft order. Taking in the NBA just gives you better lottery odds.

    • I hope Stewart isn't even on our list of potential 1st round picks and is really low on our list of 2nd and 3rd round picks. He just had a terrifying lack of production for a top 100 pick. He's the type of guy you take a late round flyer on to see if you can make a football player out of an athlete but a pretty good P5 college program failed to do it so your odds aren't great.
