If we get our wish and draft a QB we MUST sit him for a year?

Going into the offseason last year we all knew this team needed a multi year rebuild. Almost everyone expect it to be a year where it would be a miracle to even come close to 6 wins due to the amount of turnover and overall lack of talent on our roster.

I posted an article earlier from Panthers.com talking about the development of our young defense and how 10 of 11 starters will be back next year, and all being extremely young but showing flashes of being a high performing unit. We spent all draft picks on defense and see real promise going into the future.

This upcoming offseason will obviously focus primarily on the offensive side of the ball. Sure we still need a few pieces on defense, but this offseason we will have to overhaul the O line just like we had to do last offseason with the D line. Our skill positions are mostly set and a low priority. Only 1 starter will be under contract from our O line (Paradis) so assuming (praying) that at a minimum we tag Moton, we will have to replace 3 starting positions including the all important, revolving door left tackle position.

With all that being said, do you see any reason to start a rookie QB with a line in the process of being rebuilt? And if not, would you be willing to watch Teddy B start and entire season to make sure our rookie QB could sit and develop even though we all cringe at the thought of it?

Unless we somehow got Lawrence, I would 100% sit any QB we draft for the entire season. Even if Teddy got injured or something I’d play PJ or another QB ahead of him. I’m a huge fan of sitting a QB initially. And if we do that we need to commit to it, not like the Dolphins are doing with Tua which I believe is not good for his development. Sit him 100% the entire season then have him take over in 2022 ideally.

You dont draft top 10 QBs and sit them for any significant stretch anymore

mahomes stayed on the bench because KC was on a playoff run and nobody wanted to rock the boat, there was a reason the chiefs Alex Smith into the sun as soon as the season was over and giggled whenever somebody asked if they were sure they were doing the right thing. If he had played as a rookie, he would've  been OR.

I agree 100 percent. Also Tua getting pulled constantly and starting again cannot help his development and the last game when Fitz came in and won the game for them can’t help his confidence either. I know that it isn’t common to sit a top 10 pick anymore, but when you have a line that is having to be built from scratch like ours is, I can’t see any way we start them and have a situation like Burrow is in now.

What about looking out for the long term development being that our line is starting from scratch? You don’t want to end up with a situation like Burrow

our line has been passable by various grading metrics, what happened to Joe burrow was a fluke, and you dont "prepare the team for the next QB," because the NFL doesn't work that way

But 4 of our 5 starters are free agents so we aren’t going to have the same line and odds are that we will be playing multiple young/rookie players as starters next year similar to what we did this year with the defense. I don’t know if Joe Burrow was a fluke or not. He had shown that he was incredibly talented but was getting absolutely abused behind that line, which ultimately got him seriously injured. We were used to Cam Newton being tough as nails for years behind terrible lines but that’s was always held us back including getting us a ring. Last season we had three young QBs get knocked out within a two week time period.

Okay if all four of those players are gone, we'll sit the QB, fine, you win pal
