Donte Jackson close to being elite?

Overly harsh assessment. Not to mention, CB's are usually top tier trash talkers. If that is what it takes to get you hyped up, talk as much as you want.

And he is much more than a JAG. He is what, 11th or 12th all time in INT's for the franchise?

Nothin' against Jon but it's rare to see a player he doesn't have an extreme take on.

So much depends on the fits to the new scheme.  I know a little bit--not much--about what we seem to be doing.  Will start a thread to get insights from the Huddle and maybe we can get a better idea of the personnel needed to finish the picture we are painting.  The 2020 draft was a clue--

Yeah, I read that twice and said, "ISO?"  toward a CB?  Never heard of it, but I am not all knowing. It is going to cause me to research it to see exactly what he is saying and what this looks like.

The 3-3 Stack (3-3-5) is something that they mentioned during the game.  To run that defense, you need tackling DBs.  I am not a huge fan of it because it limits the pressure on the QB, but that seems to be where we are headed.  It is why we only have 3 DTs and all are 320-330--it basically looks like a 3-4 but their is no real rush LB on the LOS--that player roams and plays as much off ball/coverage as he does pass rush/run contain.  The 3-3-5 is basically one of the many sets I have seen us run as part of the big nickel.  I have also seen us in a 4-2-5, but we seem to be in the big nickel a lot.

So the roles are a bit different for the DBs.  Who are the 5 DBs--a nickel, 2 CBs and 2 Safeties--but with Chinn, we can step up a DB into the LB role and have a 4-3.  or 3-4.  So the defense.  If the end OLB on the LOS is a player like Burns or Haynes and we are in a stack (3-3-5) , the CB on that side will obviously be expected to contribute in run support/contain.

I am figuring this out by watching games on TV, so bear with my ignorance.  I suppose I am trying to figure out what kind of player we need on the outside (CB) and if Jackson is that player. I am also trying to figure out the skill set we are going to need in a MLB--are the days of the Tampa 2 MLB gone in Carolina?

Yeah I don't know if Iso is the right term, terms aren't my strong suit, but I got what he meant.

On outside runs you want to try to get a helmet on everyone on the front 7 save the linebacker (or in this age of nickel, your slot guy) furthest away from the play, and force one of the outside corners to make a play against a halfback, it's a common strategy, and easier said than done, but most times your HB should be able to win that one on one unless you have an extremely disciplined tackler out at corner.

The best tackling corners I've seen this season are the ones in Vegas, but that whole defense is trash and that was early on this season so I don't know if that kept up.

Ideally we'd need LBs that can cover well but agile enough to react to the run. Shaq has improved in coverage a lot this season so he's fine. JCJ has also stepped up a ton and I've been quite impressed with him. Jackson is also fine at DB too if he keeps up his play, more than anything we need him to cover. If he's constantly in a position where he has to make a ton of one on one tackles against HBs that's not his fault. We'll live with the results if he's occasionally put in that position. Tackling well is a bonus for any outside corner.

I think Snow gets it.

Agreed, but I am very intrigued by Evan Cooper the cornerbacks coach. He has followed Rhule from Temple, to Baylor, to us.  Also, he was recruiting coordinator at Baylor. He's definitely part of the magic that makes Rhule successful.

Either way, they did a better job with a bunch of cast offs and late draft picks than I would have predicted.

I'm willing to be patient with certain guys (reason I haven't mentioned Greg Little).

He Who Must Not Be Named has never shown a spark at all. We used a # 37 draft pick on a guy who is getting his ass handed to him by a UFA, Scott, and has actually been outplayed by Daley, a 6th rounder from the same draft. He's had all the patience I'm willing to give him.

It's tough to pull apart whether the drop-8-rush-3 thing is Snow's preference or due to the inability of the corners to cover. I'm guessing the latter, so the scheme's being used to cover up his weaknesses right now. That's not a good sign.

It's good he is playing well over that stretch. Not a fan of the player and I don't know what it would take for him to be worth a new contract other than really cheap. Also, being elite for 4 games is a hell of an improvement for Jackson, especially in a challenging year for him, but it's still not enough to say he is consistently elite or begin talking a new contract. This guy has a ton of needs to prove it left.

If Douglas can look this good in our scheme and Jackson can look good for 4 games, what would a great CB look like? That's a question I want to see answered because that would be fun to watch. Maybe even add a good Safety.

I stand by what I said; Jackson is improving. He's not "elite" (I only reserve that word for a player like Peppers, Luke or McCaffrey), but he's good or "solid" when healthy. He has shown a marked improvement from having the most missed tackles in the league to now. I say this based on observation, but his improvement is reflected in his PFF grade moving up 15 points since last year.

It's easy to bang on him for his inconsistent play during  his first couple of season's (play that's kind of expected for an inexperienced DB), but not so much this season. This season, injuries have been his bugaboo.

The injuries thing is nothing to scoff at unfortunately. He is built very very small compared to the rest of the NFL - and that's probably my biggest issue with him as a player. I don't know if his skillset can overcome the body that god gave him. Dude is fast as all hell but physically does not hold up against the giants he plays against week in and week out.
