Donte Jackson close to being elite?

I also vividly remember Chris Gamble being hated on this board and never catching a criticism break bc of a bad special teams play in Minnesota but eventually he turned into a good player. He was legit his last few years here, late bloomer type which makes sense since he was learning to play CB on the fly in the NFL.

Thomas Davis wasn't good until his tore his knee up a few times and we switched to the Tampa 2 (then he suddenly was better than Beason). I'm willing to be patient with certain guys (reason I haven't mentioned Greg Little).

He has almost always shown some elite attributes, even back to being a rookie. This year he had battled injury the entire season and still has shown flashes. This may be his most complete year, for that matter.

Listen, Gamble, Norman, Bradberry....none of these guys came in here and were top 10 CB's from day one. It took them some time to develop and I honestly think Jackson is trending that direction.

I am excited to see what he is able to do next season.

He has really Improved as he got healthy down the stretch.  He seems to not jump routes as often but rather stay in position to not allow the catch.  He is also wrapping up much better-his tackling looks great.

I hope the kid truly is close to being a lock down corner.

Dude has looked better since he has gotten back healthy and I'm one of his biggest detractors on here.

Douglas got beat up by Lock, not Donte. Missed the GB game so I don't know if he was the one who had to cover Adams, but if he did, he did a phenomenal job. If not, then I still don't really trust him to cover Julio, Evans, Thomas, or Godwin, but glad to see he looks like he's improving.

In all honesty, his tackling and physicality in the running game is VERY hit or miss.

I think that's fair given that most CBs his size and weight fully healthy wouldn't have made some of the stops he's had this season.

I absolutely would still love to have him here but JB had two inches and some pounds on him and has whiffed on plenty of tackles.

They both rotated coverage on DA and both had some solid coverage and a few plays on him.

Man you're picking a weird hill to die on. There's not a lot of 5'10 corners who are going to attack the run and before you say "what about this guy" know they're the exception, not the run. Running isos towards DBs is something....that's a common gameplan.

But that said, Donte has still put played with physicality against the run a few times this season.

Yeah, I read that twice and said, "ISO?"  toward a CB?  Never heard of it, but I am not all knowing. It is going to cause me to research it to see exactly what he is saying and what this looks like.

The 3-3 Stack (3-3-5) is something that they mentioned during the game.  To run that defense, you need tackling DBs.  I am not a huge fan of it because it limits the pressure on the QB, but that seems to be where we are headed.  It is why we only have 3 DTs and all are 320-330--it basically looks like a 3-4 but their is no real rush LB on the LOS--that player roams and plays as much off ball/coverage as he does pass rush/run contain.  The 3-3-5 is basically one of the many sets I have seen us run as part of the big nickel.  I have also seen us in a 4-2-5, but we seem to be in the big nickel a lot.

So the roles are a bit different for the DBs.  Who are the 5 DBs--a nickel, 2 CBs and 2 Safeties--but with Chinn, we can step up a DB into the LB role and have a 4-3.  or 3-4.  So the defense.  If the end OLB on the LOS is a player like Burns or Haynes and we are in a stack (3-3-5) , the CB on that side will obviously be expected to contribute in run support/contain.

I am figuring this out by watching games on TV, so bear with my ignorance.  I suppose I am trying to figure out what kind of player we need on the outside (CB) and if Jackson is that player. I am also trying to figure out the skill set we are going to need in a MLB--are the days of the Tampa 2 MLB gone in Carolina?

I think we're heading in that direction. Early MLBs existed solely to stop the run. They've adapted to be coverage guys, but not particularly well, with the exception of a few, including Luke. As we move toward more flag football rules, classic MLBs will go the way of the DoDo and there'll be more Shaqs and Chinns lining up as hybrids.

Of course, the football gods could decide to return to a more brutal sport, but that seems unlikely.

Muh, I'm not impressed and would trade his sorry big mouth ass in heartbeat if I could get anything out of him.  He's done nothing to back up his loud mouth trash talking.

He's a jag.

Overly harsh assessment. Not to mention, CB's are usually top tier trash talkers. If that is what it takes to get you hyped up, talk as much as you want.

And he is much more than a JAG. He is what, 11th or 12th all time in INT's for the franchise?

What, you can't trash talk a trash talker?  That is news to me.  He's a JAG until he constantly shows otherwise.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
