Neville Hewitt at MLB?

Ive only probably seen an hour total all season of Jets in action but every time their defense is on, Hewitt pops off the screen. He is currently only on a 1 year contract of 2 mill, what would you guys think of plugging him in here with a team that can actually do something with his talents? I’m sure he could be had for cheap and is only 27. Am I right in that the guy plays like Rhule wants players to play?

According to PFF he’s graded out 50% better than just a year ago and appears to be on the up and up. Tahir Whitehead graded out at 31.8 while he grades out at 60+ for reference.

I’ll take just about any Mike that is standing up. Man Luke’s sudden retirement has doomed our D, at least a year or two. Shaq is no where near big enough to play Mike so give me anyone.

Well our defense is statistically better than last year, so I don't think you can lay this on Luke's retirement. Not many stats are worse than last year other than some coverage stats.

Luke's retirement definitely hurt but Luke is like any MLB, his effectiveness is nullified easily by having a poor defensive line in front of him. Last year we had a very poor defensive line and Luke wasn't nearly as effective. Same thing has happened to other great MLB's.

That is also why MLB's are not typically drafted as highly as pass rush LB's or OLB's.

We had Moses and Abraham on our Defense last year. We are statistically 19th this year. I am well aware of the importance of each player and their role on defense. Let me be clear here, I am sick of seeing cornerbacks and safeties make tackles in the run game we need a competent Mike backer to properly call alignments, diagnose plays, and control gaps.

You know who else grades out at 60+? Jermaine Carter Jr.

He’s been playing well, I don’t really consider MLB a priority anymore but of course we should always be looking to upgrade every position if there’s an opportunity. This seems like a relatively lateral move though.

Well the top two tacklers on our team are LB's. CB's and safeties will always be making tackles in the run game because you are more commonly putting DB's on the field than LB's in the modern game.

We need a competent MLB but it is very far from our biggest need on the team and arguably not our biggest need on defense. In fact we have improved across the board in Adjusted Line Yards, Running Back Yards, Power Success Rate, Open Field Yards, Second Level Yards, and Stuffed Rate. That's because our DL is playing much better against the run this year, allowing our less talented LB corps to play better than our LB's did last year.

As great as it is to have a mind and HOF caliber player like Luke on the field, all you really need is the DL to do their job and the LB corps to be where they are supposed to be, when they are supposed to be. That doesn't take one person directing all the traffic, it takes 6-7 guys knowing their jobs and doing them well.

And, furthermore, we aren't going to find another Luke Keuchly. Not many players are capable of being what he was. We just need an upgrade over fuging Jermaine Carter and Tahir Whitehead. We should be able to make a big upgrade over that just dumpster diving in free agency, if nothing else.

A couple corrections should be made here, Jeremy Chinn is still listed as a Safety and I know he plays all over the field, Shaq comes in 2nd, then Tre Boston. “Cornerbacks and Safeties not named Donte Jackson will be making tackles in the run game.” That guy runs away from the ball carrier. I have seen too much tape with him avoiding contact. I know he is the small guy and used for passing purposes but teams scheme the run to him, because he refuses to tackle.

Kungfoodude you are right about Luke. I know he is a HOF caliber legend, and cannot be replaced. I suppose my frustrations are cemented with Whitehead and his miraculous ability to lose gap integrity on every single play. Carter has done a fantastic job coming in, but I still think we can sure up that position and get another starter on the secondary line, Mike would be nice, or a Sam, and leave Shaq at Will. You make solid points, I am just trying to illustrate our defensive deficiencies because other teams know them. This years D-Line is miles better than the last two years, honestly.

Panthers need about 4 Lbs, so Im for anyone that helps that.

3 TEs, and 4-5 CBs, and 9 OLmen just crazy to think people want to trade picks away (future ones too) with this many huge holes. "Nah put Trevor behind that OL filled with undrafted free agents and wavier claims, and no safety TE, he'll be fine....." Week 2 "Lawrence is out for year with a broken Neck"

Chinn has been predominately a LB for us this year, although that will change moving forward according to the coaches. We have some DB's that are suspect tacklers(Jackson, Boston). Overall, our secondary needs a lot of upgrading. I would consider that a bigger priority than MLB, because good CB's are more difficult to obtain.

Yeah, I think we can make some upgrades at LB this offseason without expending our first round pick. Don't get me wrong, if the board says take Parsons at #9 or wherever, then you take him. I am just not a fan of going outside positional value early in the draft.
