I'd give Haskins a look this offseason.

Am I the only one that feels like Grier hasn't had a real chance here?

He hasn't had a real chance because he hasn't deserved a real chance. Rhule basically all but said that this year when a reporter asked.

He is just another in a long line of Hurney busts.

We accomplished what we did this year by a group of overmatched players buying into what the staff was selling them.  Most likely, heading into next season we will be less overmatched due to our 2020 draft choices having a year of NFL experience under their belts and the additions of some players through the draft and maybe free agency that can play over their heads as a team yet again.

And we really want to add a guy who, by every account I have read (both good and bad) has talent but no desire to push himself to the next level?

Uh, in a word, no.  In two words, fugg no.

Yeah, we already had a guy like that in Eli Apple and he didn't last long. I don't think anything about what Rhule is doing suggests he wants any part of a player that has no great desire to come to work try to be the best they can be. If anything the playing time and cuts have shown that this season.

I cannot fathom Haskins coming in and doing anything more than occupying a roster spot. Perhaps he will mature enough and will ultimately want to be a better NFL player but I don't want to fund his personal journey of discovery. Let some other team do that.

He is in a bad situation, I will give him that.  He was brought in as a development project by the previous offensive brain trust and drafted too high by a guy who loved diamonds in the rough.  Last year he was briefly thrown into the fire when the situation was pretty much hopeless, with a lame duck staff, and a bunch of players who had one foot out the door already.  Not exactly set up for success.

Now the staff that was interested in seeing what he could do is gone.  The new staff, particularly on the offensive side is most likely scratching their heads wondering what they are supposed to do with him.  The guy who overdrafted him was sent packing, probably in no small part due to his propensity to overdraft projects.

I feel for the guy in that respect, but that is the NFL.  And it could be worse: he could be Haskins.  One may not have the skills, but from what I have read, has the desire to work at it.  The other probably has the raw skills but no desire.

Yeah, I have no hate at all for Will Grier. He is a local kid, he was a Panthers fan and he didn't draft himself. At some level it is too bad that he just doesn't have it but that's life in the NFL. Perhaps he can have an extended career as a 2nd or 3rd string QB and life comfortably for the rest of his life.

Jamarcus Russell 2.0.

I know he's young. I know he's not been given time or proper coaching to develop. I know he had a great college career and was taken highly in the draft. But I've also never been more confident that I'll never see a QB take another snap in the NFL than I am with Dwayne Haskins. He had his chance, blew it, and I think any NFL franchise would be foolish to give him a second look.

He didn’t have a great college career. He was a one year wonder. Rumors were out before the draft that Ohio State reps were shocked he entered the draft and felt he needed more seasoning. They also said any franchise grabbing him was going to have to be patient.

    • With a night to sleep on it I'm now firmly of the opinion that we keep letting Bryce improve the rest of the season and enter next years camp with 2 new additions to the QB room. One being a new veteran and the other being another rookie QB we can bring along slowly. If Bryce's ceiling is game manager so be it. In that instance it will be majorly beneficial to the team as a whole to have another QB waiting in the wings and use the other as trade bait. But we've got to be smart about this and think ahead. I cannot stress enough that we cannot again sit on our hands with the most important position. Meanwhile we've also been continuing to build up the rest of the roster in the meantime. Then maybe we will be ready to compete for the division and a playoff spot. That is the best path forward for this franchise given where we are and the mistakes we've made that should serve as a learning tool of what not to do.
