So what are the positives from the Panthers 2020 season?

While we have a lot of dead cap, we screwed the pooch cap wise just this year. Dead cap gets too much discussion since it’s just money paid up front that hits later years. Every player on a multi-year deal has dead cap built in their later years even if they never get cut. Short’s cap hit was $19M even though his salary was $13M. He had $6M in dead cap this year but it’s not called “dead cap” so it’s not scary.

Anyway, if you look at dead cap and IR cap, i.e. cap that didn’t help the team, half of it was due to this year’s deals. Not Luke retiring but new deals signed this year or trading players or guys doing nothing and going on IR (not CMC). Guys like Short, Weatherly, Apple, etc. Doesn’t even include Teddy or Okung and it was still $41 of the $79 dead/IR money.

Isn’t it about time for someone to attempt to make the TB contract look “not bad at all” again. Those are hilarious.

If the Panthers were going into the off-season with the 80M in cap space they should be, winning games and draft position wouldn’t matter nearly as much. But TB, KK, and Okung assured the team of a “winning” culture.

What if SD doesn’t take Herbert? How poised would people be if the team passed on him becoming they just gave a backup QB 34M guaranteed?

You would get the normal responses from the normal boot lickers.

"hindsight is 20/20"

"Herbert didn't want to play on the East Coast"

"Needed a guy who knew Brady's system"

Etc.....

We would be in so much better shape had KK and Teddy never been Panthers this season.

I like the coaching staff.

Burns has developed into an elite player.

Brown should be a pro bowler for years to come.

Chinn looks like a great pick so far.

YGM looks like a really good pick.

3 quality starters out of a draft is good, if a 4th can develop that would be great.

Efa has turned into a quality NFL player, not just a good story.

Kerr has played amazing for a cheaper free agent.

Robby was a good pick up.

Samuel has become the player a lot of thought he could be.

Moton is a top-10 tackle.

Not going to lie

Gross-Matos has impressed me with some of his flashes the last few weeks as well.

Had he not got injured earlier in the season.  Would be interesting to hear what people would be saying about him.

Peppers was a stud during rookie season, with 12 sacks in 12 games from the LDE spot.  He was a freak.  More realistically, Hardy and Johnson did not do much until year 3.   So what I saw from him was more than I saw from those two DE studs.

I think we need another inside DT good enough to necessitate a double team as well.

Burns has developed into an elite player.  As we add more pieces to the defense--like a DT with inside pass rush abilities, he will only get better.

Brown should be a pro bowler for years to come. He was the reason people struggled to run on this defense.

Chinn looks like a great pick so far.  Gonna be a S, I hope, to extend his career. I think he is a captain next year, and he will be a leader on the field--he never comes off it.

YGM looks like a really good pick.  You are smart not to judge his development on sacks alone--He has been critically important in the run game.

3 quality starters out of a draft is good, if a 4th can develop that would be great.  Do not give up on Pride--he did better than Norman his rookie year---he was giving a cushion a lot (he is a zone CB), but he could be decent

Efa has turned into a quality NFL player, not just a good story.  Yes. He is 28, so now is his time, but his versatility has been tremendous.

Kerr has played amazing for a cheaper free agent.  He seems to be liking it here. He is getting some age on him, but we need him for about 20 snaps per game.  He can do that for a few more years at a high level.

Robby was a good pick up.He needs an extension

Samuel has become the player a lot of thought he could be.  Gonna be an interesting offseason.

Moton is a top-10 tackle.  Yep.

I think Pride looked bad at times, but a 4th round CB forced to start is going to get challenged.  I think he will be better for it.

Paradis improved this season--still not worth his contract.

Boston seemed to get better as the year progressed.  They played him more in the box and dropped Chinn.  That hurt Chinn's numbers, but improved the defense.

Roy was decent for a 7th round draft pick.

We have a good backup RB in Rodney Smith.

Charlton was a good punter.

Miller was not bad at G---he could remain for a season as we develop a LT and (hopefully) address LG with a player that can effectively pull and run block.

2, 1000 yard WRs.

Cannon seems to be a good back and special teams player

Players like Franklin (S) Hartsfield (DB) stepped up and played a lot down the stretch.

Is Action Jackson finally getting it?  His last 2 games suggest it.

Can we survive another season with Boston?  Maybe.

The coaching staff seemed to improve(save perhaps Brady). Phil Snow especially has been excellent as far as improvement over the course of the year.

On offense we were able to find a way to have a relatively mediocre offensive line despite being manned by a bunch of a roster filler types and a rotating assortment of them, at that. Anderson was a great signing, Samuel really stepped up into an expanded roll, Mike Davis did a very good job filling in for CMC.

Defensively, our pups looked very promising to great. Burns is bordering on elite, Brown consistently improved, YGM showed lots of flashes, Kerr was excellent when Short when down, Roy has gotten better each game, Obada looks worthy of an actual contract now, Chinn was absolutely a revelation, Elder and Douglas were solid.

We seem to have some pieces there to build upon and we were in almost every game the entire year.

It's important we go out and crush another offseason so we can keep this momentum up in 2021.

Outside of Kenny Robinson every draft pick had significant contributions to this team.

I think the biggest surprise of this group is Pride.   Though he hasn't been great for a forth round pick.  He's shown that he may end up being the steal of the entire draft.  (Yeah I know we stole Chinn in the 2nd but he would have been selected in the 2nd had we not got him first)

Honorable Mention is B. Roy.  Stout F-er that has held his own and credit Rhule for knowing his demeanor of being a tough player.

Hurney being gone forever (hopefully), coaching staff instilling some fight in a young rag tag group, some of the young guys stepping up and making massive strides. Biggest positive is and always will be Hurney is gone.

Unless Jerry Richardson were to somehow manage to get the team back, I don't see any real chance of Marty returning.

Of course, if Jerry got control of the team again, we'd be screwed regardless.

    • When we drafted Luke, we already had Cam, Smith, Olsen, Stewart, Deangleo, Gross, Kalil, CJ, Hardy, Beason, TD, Gamble (and maybe more I'm forgetting), we had a lot of great pieces in place. Going pure BPA for a player with Luke's potential when the LB you already have is different when you already have all those pieces in place.  Our OL right now is probably in a better shape than that team and our RBs and TE have potential compared to proven vets back then, but after that, the 2012 roster was in a far better shape than we are right now. We need a #1 WR, DEs, LBs, DBs, C, and depending who you ask a QB.  Going BPA at pick #5 when that player is a DT and your current best player on either side of the ball is a DT, seems irresponsible. If he's the only player they like that high left, then you trade back and go with position of more need at a slot that makes sense for the player while adding other picks.  If you trade back and he falls because other teams don't need/want a DT, then you consider him at that point because of the value.
    • This sounds like the same back and forth when we drafted a LB when we already had a LB or as mentioned prior back to back DLs. I want the BPA, if it is another DT so be it. (No not a kicker/punter for those people that think they are funny))
    • I’m hoping SMU messes it all up and wins out. Imagine the SEC & BI0 would crap themselves trying to “fix” the problem.
