I need my quarterback to throw the ball. 200 yards isn’t a huge ask. He was averaging 155 passing yards a game. 38.75 passing yards a quarter. Don’t ignore the fact that in their biggest game of the season last year they asked him to only throw 10 times. They asked him to run 30 times. If I had a true top 10 pick QB at my FBS school I’d take full advantage of throwing.
If you have Zach Wilson do you just throw the ball 10 times and lean on the run? No, because throwing the ball is a strength of what he does.

You have to be careful about knocking a player for being asked not to do something, that is entirely different than not being able to do something.

Cam only averaged around 200 yards a game in college.

Herbert wasn't asked to throw deep.  A draft negative on him was that a very large percentage of throws he made in college were easy, screens and such.  A lot of us, myself included, confused his lack of deep passing as being because of his lack of ability to do it, when in fact it was him not being asked to.  Those are two totally different things.

A lot of people viewed Cam not running a pro style offense is college as a negative.  That doesn't mean he can't do it, just means he hadn't been asked to.

I would prefer a college QB that has NFL abilities, that only throws 24 times a game, over a college QB that throws 40 times a game but hasn't shown the ability to make high level throws.

Quit looking at stats and look at attributes that translate to the next level.

Yes I think with nfl coaching and practice he could throw to check downs lol. He’s shown he can throw to check downs in games. If you don’t wanna draft a qb because you don’t think he can throw a check down on a blitz then uh ok. Another big thing was he’s only played one season and one game. So if you don’t think he can learn more and hone in on his craft then ok.

You don’t think that his college head coach hasn’t tried teaching him to check down to not take extra hits?

1) Nobody is suggesting taking a QB who throws 40 times a game and hasn’t shown the ability to make high level throws. I’m suggesting we don’t take a QB who completes 16 passes a game just because of “potential”. He hasn’t shown enough in one season of football for me to feel good about taking him in the top 10. Trade back? Maybe. But I didn’t feel good about Jordan Love either and everyone tried telling me he was a top 10 pick last year and he dropped. One year wonders worry me.

2) Just because you and others assumed Herbert couldn’t throw deep passes doesnt mean that has to be projected onto me in terms of Lance. Herbert was productive. Herbert showed us film for years with hundreds of passes against far better competition than what Lance has faced. I warmed up to Herbert before the draft and would have been okay grabbing him if he fell but I didn’t want us to move up for him. I was wrong about that and whatever the cost would have been to move up one spot, we should have done it. He’s awesome.

3) Lance has multiple full games on YouTube including his National Championship game last year. I’m not just “looking at a box score” and judging off that. If I did I would be enamored with a kid who didn’t throw an INT all year.

Lance will not be running the ball 15-20 times a game next year at the NFL level. And if he is, he won’t be around long. If I wanted to just look at positive attributes and see how they could project at the next level I’d be a Raiders fan because they constantly take traits over production and it’s not worked out.

4) If you’d like we can make a thread breaking down film of any of Lance’s games on YouTube and go over every offensive snap and grade it. I wouldn’t be against that.

I get it if you don’t wanna take the risk because he hasn’t reached his full potential and he’s only played one year. Especially in the top 10. There is a risk he could bust. I get it. We have a top ten pick and we need to make sure we hit on it. Especially at QB because if we don’t it sets us back two fold. We don’t have a franchise and we wasted a top ten pick when we could’ve gone a different direction and shored up other aspects of our team with a talented player who could be a more sure thing.

Lance is 20 years old and super promising. His second play of his first game with all the pressure of national championships he throws a 60 yard drop in the bucket bomb for a td. I just personally think this guy has the “it” factor mixed with his natural abilities and how hard working he is that makes me think his trajectory is going way up. I would take that chance. We desperately need a franchise qb.

Then who are you saying take?  Unless you have the top pick in the draft, there are going to be questions marks about any of them.

Are you happy with Teddy?

Do you want to take a guy later in the draft? who? where?

Its easy to to question selections, but at some point you have to roll the dice on one.

1) Where we are at I would not take a QB this year. I’ve repeated over and over who I would take. The only QBs I’d spend a first round pick on in this draft are Lawrence, Fields and Wilson. If they aren’t there I wouldn’t force a pick on a QB just because. That’s how you get a Josh Rosen.

2) No, I am not happy with Teddy and that’s been clear since the beginning of the year. I was lit up for telling people he wasn’t the future early and often.

3. We have other needs to address still before taking a flyer on Trask/Jones/Newman in a third round pick. And if you are going to look at one of these guys in the third I’d rather reach out to Jacksonville and see if they would trade Minshew for a fourth. And again, I wouldn’t complain if we grabbed them in the the third but I’d certainly not want to spend our high second round pick on one of them. If we could move up to ensure Wilson I’d be all about that.

4. I’m critical of all draft prospects. There’s on a few guys in this draft I’m completely sold on. I’ll root for whoever we pick even if it is Lance but that doesn’t mean I feel it’s smart to draft him at our spot. If we missed on Teddy in Free Agency and miss on Lance at 9 in the draft it’s going to be years before we have another crack at a top tier QB unless we hope one becomes available via trade or free agency. Where we were picking I was excited about because it basically was locked on getting one of the top 3 QBs in this draft.

I watch the games. I’m not sold on picking Lance at 9. I’m not saying he is a terrible prospect and I’ve repeatedly written I understand why others are enticed by the potential.

Im not sure if you just haven’t seen any of my posts before this but you are asking questions to things I’ve answered a bunch of times already in previous threads around draft prospects.

and you might never find yourself in the "correct" draft position to draft a QB that you feel are worthy.  You can just keep signing average vets

Actually I agree with you to a a large degree, I'm not going to draft Trask in the top-10, but I would include Lance.  You have 3 guys you would draft in the top 10, I have 4.  After that I'm either going to trade down and try to get a QB or take a non-QB.

We can revisit this in 3 years, only then will we know what the correct answer is.

Also have you looked at next years class?  Lets say we are picking in the 15-20 range next year, is there a good chance someone will be there then?

Next years class is semi suspect. However, there are some decent options up top right now plus there will always be fast risers that come out of nowhere like Lance, Burrow, Wilson.
