Trade the farm to the Jets 2nd pick ASAP

Recommended Posts

I admire the boldness of this thread, even though I do not agree or totally disagree with it.  We do this trade only if we think we can only get better at QB with Fields--if there are no real options.  Here is another unpopular thought that is reality and must be considered.  So I am not advocating for this line of thinking, I am simply saying if we have a functional, professional GM, scouts, and coaching staff, this will be part of the evaluation process.

1.  Why was Teddy mediocre at best this season?  (If the answer is 100% Teddy, you skip questions 2- 4)

2. What can we do to improve Teddy's effectiveness?  (A Teddy advocate would say, "Build a strong OL--he was rarely allowed to sit in a pocket and deliver throws---and is Thomas/Manhertz/Temple guy the best we can do at TE?  Did you see how the TEs helped Fields last night?  Why does a College QB have better TEs than a pro QB?)

3.  Without an OL, TE, or CMC, did Teddy have the armor and weaponry to win in the NFL?  Was he throwing short because he had no time, or does he lack the confidence and arm strength to read the defense and attack the deep third?

4.  Would Teddy with a stud TE, LT, and LG be better than Fields with no stud LT, LG, or TE?

Once you have determined why Teddy struggled, and the reason was not Teddy, then putting a rookie in that situation is not going to end well either (see TEAM, EVERY FRANCHISE THAT DID NOT SURROUND A ROOKIE QB WITH PROTECTION AND WEAPONS.).

5.  Once it has been determined that Teddy was simply not the answer at QB, you then decide which players are likely to prosper in this system. Skill Sets, etc.  Or you decide to change the system to meet the skill sets of the QB.  What is the strategy here?

6. History tells us that there are as many talented college QBs who bust as there are superstars. Understanding that the recovery time from a bad choice is greater the more you invest into that choice.  If we trade the farm for Fields and he takes the path of every other Ohio State QB since Art Schlichter,  are you willing to face the fan base for three more years of losing?  Or, if you do not make the move and we continue to stay in QB search mode for 3 more years like 60% of the NFL, what do you say to the fan base when you are picking 9th (or better) in what might be the best QB draft class since 1983 (which turned out many busts)?

7.  Is Fields without a LT and stud TE (example) better than Lance with a stud LT and TE?  (point: you have to consider the weaknesses at other positions this trade will cause. Fields, last night, got solid play out of his stud OL, at least one WR, 2 TEs, and RB.  How good would he have been without all these pieces in place? Can we make the trade and still surround him with these?

Yall get the idea--addition by subtraction is not always smart.

It is a big decision, but the fact that we are going after a new GM means something--at least we know Marty Hurney will not be involved.

I don’t disagree with any of this. Was actually the point I was making in regards to CMC in that a string of unrelated injuries doesn’t equate to him “being done.”

FYI, rehab is my profession

Oh I know, just got me thinking and I went on a tangent--I was supporting your point about CMC.  What kind of rehab?  Interesting.  I had a shoulder---hated those guys until I started seeing the results. Then I stopped whining, bit the bullet, and did everything they said.

I think a lot of it depends on our evaluation of the QB prospects. If we have one of the non-Lawrence guys ranked head and shoulders above the rest then it's worth considering.

Yes--Everything to do with it.  If we can win with Lance and think he will be a high-caliber QB, you do not trade up for Fields.  Fields had a good game, and it is understandable that everyone wants him now.  But they will watch all his film and see the ups and downs.

If Trey Lance, Zack Wilson fall to us then we get either one. If Michah Parsons is on the board take him. Then draft Mac Jones or Kyle Trask in the 2nd round. One way or another we have to draft a quarterback ASAP because Teddy Bridgewater is not the answer. He is back up material at best.
