Jeff Ireland rumored to be a GM candidate

Mr. Scot

Not for or against the guy at this point but could be he wasn't ready to be a GM when he got the Miami job. His time in New Orleans could have served him well and prepared him to be successful the 2nd time around.  It's not like  he got fired and was just sitting on the sidelines doing nothing for a few years.

It's also been said that Terry Fontenot has a lot of input on their drafts as well

Fontenot is in charge of pro personnel.

Mind you, I'd take Fontenot as a candidate too but he doesn't have any connection to Matt Rhule that I know of. Ireland does.

I’ll be honest, I don’t think the drafts were all that awful and his 10 worst things were not that awful aside from Dez Bryant. Most of it was not getting a QB although he drafted Ryan Tanehill. Seems to me that maybe some of his “draft” problems were coach related (in his top 10, a couple things were about not being able to get a top coach, kind of a chicken egg scenario). Seems like he did get a QB and the coaching wasn’t good enough as Tennessee seems to be happy with Tannehill now.

Anyway, doesn’t seem all that bad, most drafts came away with 2-3 starters and some guys like Tannehill that were coach issues. We don’t need a coach so I’m willing to look at his Saints drafting seeing as how he also had a competent coach.

If you're gonna look at those though, you gotta look at the New Orleans drafts too.

Jeff Duncan had an article recently suggesting that the Saints 2017 Draft class might have been one of the best ever.

Look at the actual drafts. They aren’t as bad as people would think especially when you realize that people like Lamar Miller and Tannehill had multiple years of starting post Miami. I count 18 3+ year starters in his first 5 drafts. 2013 was the worst draft by far but add those to the Saints drafts and he’s not bad. Again, hard to tell when he’s working with meh coaches. That’s his fault but again we don’t give a crap about his coach hiring skills. We care about his working with Rhule drafting skills.

I’m OK with the hire if he learned more in NO and works well with Rhule. I didn’t see any horrific FA deals in his top 10 worst things.

What is Ireland's connection to Matt Rhule?

They're friends. From my understanding they became acquainted when Rhule became head coach at Baylor. Ireland is a Baylor alumnus.

It was reported that Ireland attended the last game Rhule coached at Baylor and stopped in to catch up with him pregame.

That is a huge factor. And any time you can get stronger and weaken your opponent at the same time, you should.

Man, some of his second rounders were vintage Hurney picks:

Pat White

Chad Henne

Phil Merling

Koa Misi

Daniel Thomas

Jamar Taylor

Arguably his best pick in the second was Johnathan Martin...

This doesn't even take into account taking Dion Jordan at 3 overall in 2013...

This seems like a lateral move to me, at least based on his previous tenure as a GM.
