Jeff Ireland rumored to be a GM candidate

Jonathan Jones was being interviewed about the Panthers firing Hurney. Nick Wilson asked him if he knew of any candidates. He mentioned a couple of hypotheticals (Ed Dodds, Nick Caserio, Ryan Poles) but gave one specific name that's being linked to the Panthers in "league circles",

Jeff Ireland

The connection to Matt Rhule is obviously fuel for the speculation, but Ireland's been a hot GM candidate for a few years now due to the work he's done running the Saints draft.

So at this point, Ireland is an official...rumor.

Took a look at the Saints forum...

Saint fans are nervous, unhappy and worried at the prospect of Ireland taking the Panthers job. A few are rationalizing reasons why he wouldn't want the promotion to GM or want to leave the Saints while others are resigned to him being gone.

Granted, might not happen, but... :)

Yep.

Here's a rundown of what he did that got himself fired:

There was this guy named Bill something who sucked in Cleveland but did a lot better on his second job.

I don't know if Ireland's the guy, but he's done enough at this point to be a hot candidate for not just our job, but others also,

    • I posted this article in a couple threads, but I thought it might help some warm up to the idea of drafting Stewart with our first pick. https://www.sbnation.com/2025/2/20/24368685/shemar-stewart-nfl-draft-profile-texas-am So Stewart played at a beefed up 290lb and lined up at 4i for Texas A&M this year. He pretty easily (one offseason) leaned up to 267lb for the combine.    People obviously point to his lack of production, and it shouldn’t be ignored. But what would his stats look like if he had played at 270lb as a traditional 4-3 DE or a power rushing OLB this year?    Plus, for a team as lacking on the defensive line as we are, I love Stewart’s versatility. He can operate as a strong side OLB on rushing downs and move in to DE on passing downs. Wonnum and Clowney are both under contract one more year here. We need a plan, and I think we could do a lot worse than Stewart.
    • That bothers me too.  With Clowney and Wonnum, he would have a year to add 10-15 lbs and hopefully, become a three down edge, but that is all he is right now--you are right. This paragraph gave me hope--(NFL Draft Buzz, fwiw):  "Pearce profiles as an immediate impact pass-rush specialist with the ceiling to develop into a complete three-down edge defender. His elite get-off and bend profile perfectly for today's pass-happy NFL, where his ability to threaten the edge will command attention from day one. Smart defensive coordinators will initially deploy him in obvious passing situations while developing his run defense..." then compares him to Burns. Let's just hope that Graham falls to us or we get a trade down offer.
