How is a 2nd round bust worse than trading 2 first round picks just to massively overpay a player? The Gilbert contract would've been bad even if it were just a free agent signing. He was a solid player but definitely overpaid, and giving 2 first round picks was unacceptable for that type of deal.

Because even if somebody is overpaid, at least they contribute something. And Gilbert was actually a pretty good player, just not as good as his contract or what we gave up for him.

Question for looooooooong time Panther fans:

Has any Hurney move been any worse then George Siefert's Sean Gilbert deal?

Yeah, Hurney was bad and I've wanted him gone for years, but despite his utter incompetency, Seifert's deal to get Gilbert may have been the worst this franchise has ever survived.

(Prior to the 1999 season, Gilbert was signed to a 7-year, $46.5M and 2 first round picks. The salary cap in 1999 was $57.3M)

Hurney agreeing to return as GM was the worse move he ever made.

Butler has actually been coached in Buffalo....go figure!

Not that Butler matters anymore but Butler was also the lowest 1st round pick in Panther history. Calling him a bust or not isn’t as meaningful as a top 10 or even top 20 pick. KB was tied for the second lowest 1st round pick behind only Butler.

Fired four days before Christmas and one day after his birthday, but most importantly the day after the Panthers were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet again on his watch.

Yeah it sucks, but it was justified. There's also a lot of chatter that this was done early so he'd have a better chance at the job in Washington.

The two first rounders would’ve certainly contributed as much or more than Gilbert did, and for much cheaper. Clausen was a terrible pick, no doubt. But on the whole it was not that terrible of a move when put into context. It was a 2nd round pick who busted, there are plenty of those each year.

Fwiw, and I don’t know for sure, but Hurney likely had a say in the Gilbert trade. He held a position of influence with the Panthers starting in 1998, when the Gilbert deal went down.

One of my biggest gripes with Hurney/all is their unwillingness to make competitive trades over the years.

Personal responsibility is a thing too. Butler didn’t play well until he was in contract year. He was an insurance pick that we could have used elsewhere.

I honestly was about to post why David Tepper has been awfully quiet this year compared to last year. And today Tepper speaks for the first time this year and he drops this bomb! Wow! Tepper is not one to hide how he truly feels and he just called out Hurney for being old and outdated which I think is true. Excited for some real change!
