As to the timing of Hurney's firing, let's look at the evidence:

1. The Panthers were just eliminated from the playoffs.

2. Once again, the QB Hurney signed to a questionable contract came up short (0-8 this year) when trailing by a single score in the fourth quarter. Once again, he looked VERY bad in the process.

3. The Panthers draft position is now Top 4, improving their chances to draft a top QB.

The very FIRST business day after this all occurred, Hurney was fired. Could be that it all came to a head through meetings yesterday/this morning.

Tepper's statement indicated Rhule and Hurney were not aligned, forcing Tepper to step in and make decisions, a place he didn't want to be. It's likely the Panthers are now targeting a QB with the 1st round pick and *may* entertain the idea of trying to move up and get the guy they really want (btw, Marty doesn't have a good track record where this is concerned).

Sounds like Marty may have wanted to ride it out with Bridgewater and not draft a QB in the 1st. That conflict may have been strong enough that Tepper decided to make the move now. From Tepper's statement, this has been an ongoing issue.

Hurney needed to go, but its going to suck not hitting on every 1st round pick. Gettleman came in and immediately busted 4 times in a row before picking McCaffrey. Hurney has only busted once since 2002 in Jeff Otah.

Say what? Star was good. KB was good pre-ACL. Shaq is decent, he was just a luxury pick and you need those guys to be great. Butler was the loan true bust and that one really stung because it was another luxury pick.

Butler looks a lot better in Buffalo now, though.

He only looks good because he no longer has the stigma of being a disappointing 1st round pick for them. He's just a mid-level FA signing for the Bills. They'd be saying he sucks if they'd picked him in the 1st.

They switched him from 3 tech to 1 tech.

Bills beat writer Joe Buscaglia actually wrote that switch has made the Bills D far more dominant.

When it was stated Hurney had a great eye for talent the writing was on the wall to be fired . He gave too much money to Teddy and maybe too much to CMC .   Now Tepper can bring in his man along with Rhule .
