Boston has opinions on Cam

PanthersATL

Recommended Posts

Last week I was at a local store (wearing a Panthers sweatshirt). Saw a guy leaving wearing a Patriots jacket. I stopped him and had this conversation...

Me: "How do you like your QB?"
Him: "You want him?"
(I point at my sweatshirt)
Him: "You want him back?"

We chatted briefly about the ups and downs that both our teams have had this season, and went on our separate ways. The point is, a player's worth always comes down to on-the-field performance. That conversation would be completely different if the Patriots were in playoff contention after this weekend.

Browsing some news sites this evening as I heard about (but haven't yet seen the details of) the Patriots loss today, where I ran across this from https://www.boston.com/sports/new-england-patriots/2020/12/20/patriots-dolphins-12-thoughts, which sounds a lot like what we were seeing first-hand ourselves in his last two seasons with us (whether we want to admit it or not, injuries notwithstanding).

It’s been fun and enlightening in a lot of ways to have Newton around this season, and in those first couple of weeks it seemed like this could work in a satisfying way. But he just can’t throw the ball with the timing, touch, and accuracy necessary to succeed in the passing-oriented NFL. Because of this, it just feels hopeless whenever the Patriots fall behind, as they did in the second half after holding the Dolphins scoreless in the first. All right, I’ll say it: Might as well play Jarrett Stidham now.

And then more clicking led me to this piece from Nov which may have already been chatted about here: https://www.boston.com/sports/new-england-patriots/2020/11/10/patriots-cam-newton-not-long-term-solution

While it was nice to see Newton not fumbling the ball on the 19-yard-line with the game on the line, not failing to find a wide-open N’Keal Harry with…the game on the line, not getting pounded to the ground for a one-yard loss as time expires with…the game on the line, and not doing whatever it was he brought to the 49ers game, this was no sudden metamorphosis into a Pro Bowl-caliber player.

for all the right things Newton has done for the Patriots from a locker room, team-building perspective, his performance on the gridiron has been borderline pedestrian.

We had the privilege of enjoying Cam play at an MVP caliber level for us.  Question is whether he still has that skillset in him, no matter where he winds up next season.  (Washington and NE are both being touted as possible places to land....)

Patriots have a top 10 defense, top 10 offensive line, and the number 1 special teams in the NFL. Not to mention a mastermind HC.

They do have shitty offensive weapons but Cam is playing horrid. Still bad mechanics, still can’t throw short passes. 10 interceptions on the year, benched twice, a lot of missed passes for incompletions even when his poo WRs had a chance. He is a big part of why they’re losing. And as much as people here don’t want to admit, he’s playing worse than TB. We’ve seen what cam has done with worse weapons and a similar situation (2015). But he’s not the same.

Not surprising at all Pats fans want to move on. He needs to retire or accept a back up role. Thank god he wasn’t signed long term here, but it would have been nice to play him out his one last year although nothing indicates he would’ve, but the contrary.

Cam and bill are the reasons the pats have 6 wins, that is a 2 win team at best without cam starting.

idk why people expect mvp stats when your top wrs are Byrd and Meyers

Because he won MVP with Ted Ginn and Philly Brown as his top WRs. Not much better.

That’s not a sustainable task for anyone not named Tom Brady, to make no names into household names.

again, they’d be in the Lawrence sweepstakes if not for cam

Devante Adams was out a ton last year for GB. Rodgers still produced. He has made MVS, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Ty Montgomery look good throughout his career.

Brady last year with the same level of WR talent had Phil Dorsett, Edelman and Mohammed Sanu. Took them to the Playoffs.

Hell  Carson Wentz had only Alshon Jeffrey for part of the year and Nelson Agholor and still managed a 9-7 record and playoff appearance.

Cam is a shell of his old self. He is leaving so many layups on the field it's painful to watch.

But why has he been benched twice by BB, thrown 10 interceptions, and misses wide open receivers?

You conveniently leave out Aaron Jones and the Packers top 5 defense, even with that being stated do we really think cam is on the level rodgers is as a passer ?

again, Brady also had the #1 dvoa on defense, compared to the current pats defense which is at 32 dvoa.

he’s above his career high this year in completion percentage, I never understood how his incompletions get magnified compared to his peers. Every qb misses some throws.

wentz is benched for a reason, dude had more weapons than the pats and half the wins before he was benched, you’re making my point.

granted this year is nothing he wants to hang his hat on, but expecting any other qb not named Tom Brady, Aaron rodgers, or drew Brees  to find success with this current pats team is a pipe dream
