Baldy breaks down Panthers young stars

One of the big issues is that we need to extend the good young players too. If we keep losing a Moton and/or Samuel because we paid Short, Teddy, Weatherly and Okung we’re just going to keep getting stuck in the close cycle. The 2020 draft helped so we need another couple like that.

I agree with you that the secondary is the main spot needing help. If we draft well there it would pay the biggest dividends on D.

Losing Moton just isn't an option IMO. Samuel comes down to market value I think. We can't go crazy paying a #3 WR huge money.

I hope so. Pay him LT money. Sucks so much that we pissed away so much cap space on this season when it was obvious we wouldn’t compete. Just with Okung and Short (certainly not 5 year plan guys) that would have been an extra $5.5M a year you could pay Moton for a 5 year extension. Would have been like paying him $10-12M a year, plenty cheap. I mean with the cap we blew we could have been sitting in the same situation we are now except having Moton for no cost for the next 5 years. Would have made Moore and even Samuel extensions no brainers.

If Efe and Kerr are playing so well coupled with Burns and Brown you would think they would be more effective as a unit. Obada and Kerr are decent rotational guys but another strong D Lineman is needed.

We are playing good in bits and pieces.  Go to PFF and look at some of the run stop grades of players such as Brown, Efa, and Chinn.  What you are seeing happen on the field is actually showing up in their grades.

We  have some guys making some splash plays and that gives hope for the future, but these little highlight pieces don't give fans the full picture.  A  sack is great, but what about the other 48 snaps.  The snap they took the wrong angle, or the missed gap assignment that allowed a first down run.

Sounds like he is saying "El Torto"

Also, I knew I wasnt going crazy last night when I saw Chinn at MLB on a handful of snaps Lastly, who else here noticed Rhule coaching up Burns and giving him advice heading into that Packers final 3rd down? I am so happy to see what this franchise is putting together. Just have to get to the next level.

Derrick "El Torto" Brown sounds reel good to my ears

I think Carter & Burris are a bit unsung right now.  And Pride has been able to hold his own MUCH better than I thought.

Saying this not because they're future stars or anything but they actually seem like really good pieces to have. A good supporting cast around Chinn, Burns, Brown needs yo be maintained; they can't all be stars.  We need a min. 1 more guy as a stud on D (and Boston gone), but this defense could be pretty damn good if we get a legit CB1 & MLB and rid ourselves of the scraps.

idk if i'd call obada a star but he's definitely useful depth

Either way, I don't think we get him for $750,000 next season. He's played better inside next to Brown than on the outside, nice blend of speed and strength. Good story, good player who's about to sign a life changing (if not massive) contract.

Shaq is like everyone else on defense. They are learning a new system by a coordinator who is learning as well. Their scheme has been unsound for much of the year. Hard to say that much as long as they are improving which I think they all. For what it is worth, Shaq is the best linebacker we got unless you want to keep Chinn as a linebacker rather than a big safety.

His contract isn't as bad as some think. Comparing his contract to other outside linebackers, he is 15th on the list of highest paid linebackers.  Or was, might be higher next year. And we can cut him without a tremendous amount of Dead money after next year.

Deac, you need to quit saying this.  It's a terrible contract for an average player.

Next season (so far) he's within 3M of Khalil Mack as far as cap hits.

It lists him as ILB, and usually the highest paid ILB's are MLB's which he isn't, but none the less, his cap hit next season is 2nd, only behind Bobby Wagner.

It was really simple, and we screwed it up.

    • When we drafted Luke, we already had Cam, Smith, Olsen, Stewart, Deangleo, Gross, Kalil, CJ, Hardy, Beason, TD, Gamble (and maybe more I'm forgetting), we had a lot of great pieces in place. Going pure BPA for a player with Luke's potential when the LB you already have is different when you already have all those pieces in place.  Our OL right now is probably in a better shape than that team and our RBs and TE have potential compared to proven vets back then, but after that, the 2012 roster was in a far better shape than we are right now. We need a #1 WR, DEs, LBs, DBs, C, and depending who you ask a QB.  Going BPA at pick #5 when that player is a DT and your current best player on either side of the ball is a DT, seems irresponsible. If he's the only player they like that high left, then you trade back and go with position of more need at a slot that makes sense for the player while adding other picks.  If you trade back and he falls because other teams don't need/want a DT, then you consider him at that point because of the value.
    • This sounds like the same back and forth when we drafted a LB when we already had a LB or as mentioned prior back to back DLs. I want the BPA, if it is another DT so be it. (No not a kicker/punter for those people that think they are funny))
    • I’m hoping SMU messes it all up and wins out. Imagine the SEC & BI0 would crap themselves trying to “fix” the problem.
