Chinn up, everyone

Jeremy Chinn, the late second round pick from Southern Illinois, just became the third Panther to reach 100 tackles as a rookie--and he is a defensive back/OLB/Nickel hybrid player.  The other 2?  Middle Linebackers Luke and Jon Beason.

And there is talk that Chase Young is in the running for defensive ROY.  No way.

  • Young has 35 (26 solo) tackles,  5.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles and a fumble return of 47 yards.
  • Chinn has 101 tackles (61 solo), 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, 1 interception, and 2 fumble returns for 45 yards, and 2 TDs.

By far our best player this season. Pro Bowler.

he's already won defensive rookie of the month twice.

you'd think the same things that would theoretically stop him from getting DROTY would have stopped him there.

like it's pretty clear listening to the announcers the league is aware how freakishly good this kid is. the panthers coverage prepares during the week to talk about him.

and last night, good lord he was all over the field in the first half. he cleaned up everything.

If we are going to use tackles a huge indicator of performance does that mean Boston is our 3rd best player on defense?

Don't get me wrong, I like what Chinn has done so far this year but people severally overate tackles as a indicator of playing well.

Tackles are largely a product of scheme and position.  If another safety played in his spot would their tackle totals be much different?  Would those tackles happen a step sooner? a step later? Tackles by themselves don't tell you the entire picture.

Tackles by LBers are the indicator of success. Because this means the tackles are being made before they are getting to second level (the majority of the time) Tackles by Safeties depend on the position they play (FS or SS) and the style of defense. In the case of Chinn, it is not over rate to use tackles to determine his performance. His a LB and expected to stop the ball carrier from getting to the secondary.

Chinn was on Adam’s a lot last night if people didn’t notice. Not the whole game but noticeable snaps. 40 something yards for him.

he is an absolute stud and can line up in so many positions and do damage. Imagine what this defense is gonna be able to do in two years when these players are in their 3rd and 4th years. Like I’ve said this defense will be elite in two years.

He plays at a different speed than everybody else on our D. He flys around like a damn missile out there.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
