M. Miller’s QB Scouting notebook dec 16, 2020

Fields will be without his #1 receiver for the championship game today. Last week he was without 4/5 of his starting offensive line ( 3 on covid and 1 got hurt early in the game ). So today he will rely on a true sophomore as his top pass catching target.

Trask will get a boost from last week getting Pitts back but he’s going against by far the best team in the country.

Nothing noteworthy to report on Lawrence. They have all their big dogs going against ND and all theirs.

Nothing to report on Wilson since he isn’t playing this week.

Nothing to report on Lance because NDSU only played one game this year.

No I didn't say it mattered. However saying they would be the fastest white qbs in history would be an understatement.(tre Lance point noted)

Not that it matters but technically the fastest 40 time at the NFL draft on record was a white QB, as was the fastest at the 2020 combine.

It's just a very strange thing to point out.

I would love for you to show your work there. And not some he said hand timed 40 on campus.  Not strange at all.

So, hypothetically, if Florida beats Alabama.....would they no longer be the "by far best team in the country?"

I am only accounting for 2011 and later, which is basically the era in which the NFL switched to using more accurate measurements(so this would remove times like Vick's 4.33). I was looking at some older data, so I found a better source. So my "All-time" statement was incorrect. See below for the top 40 times under 4.6 since 2011:

4.59 Josh Portis
4.59 Andrew Luck
4.59 Jalen Hurts
4.58 Geno Smith
4.58 Jordan Jefferson
4.58 Cole McDonald
4.57 Trace McSorley
4.57 Blake Sims
4.56 Cam Newton
4.56 Jeff Driskel
4.54 Trevor Knight
4.53 Colin Kaepernick
4.51 Jake Locker
4.47 Tyrod Taylor
4.33 Robert Griffin III

The 2020 combine fastest combine time(4.58 s) was Cole McDonald(Hawaii). Just slightly ahead of Jalen Hurts 4.59 s.

I’m a Gator fan. I live Gator football year round. When dealing with hypothetical it can get crazy. If Florida wins Alabama would POSSIBLY not look like the best team in the country by far. However, what if Alabama and Notre Dame lose today? Is Clemson number 1 then? They’ve played a bunch of meh games this year. Even ND has played a bunch of tight games going into the third quarter. The only team who has blown everyone apart this year has been Bama. Down players, down head coach, doesn’t matter. Mac Jones throws the ball up to Smith and it’s been magic all year.

I don’t want to put the horse before the carrot but after last weeks performance how can anyone think Florida is going to hang around with Bama? Kyle Pitts is the best player at his position in the country. Does he make THAT much of a difference?

I think we will find out. The one thing that is difficult to account for is that we have not inter-conference measuring sticks. What if the SEC turns out to be a paper tiger like the Big Ten or ACC is being regarded now? We actually won't know this until we start seeing them play each other.

I would agree with the statement that Alabama seems to be the clear #1(also fug them and fug Saban). But the unknowns are a lot bigger this year than in past years.

Bama will take him away and dare Trask to be able to move enough to keep hitting his receivers. Trask is gonna be severely tested, and honestly, I hope he proves worthy. You're right on about Pitts, though, that dude is special. He's gonna cause headaches for NFL DC's.
