Playoff Eli is no mere mortal

In the 2011 Playoffs, the Giants beat teams with a 10-6, 15-1, 13-3, 13-3 (ATL, GB, SF,  NE) record. Combined, that is a record of 51-13 with the Falcons being nearly half of those losses.

In those games, Eli went 106-163 with 1219 yards, 9 TDs,  and only 1 interception.

Yeah, overall Eli wasn't great but on those two Super Bowl runs he absolutely was. Same for Foles and that run with Philly. Delhomme had a lot of that in him too. Ideally, you want a guy who is flat out elite but if you can't have that, you want to have a guy who is at his best in the biggest moments.

There's a lot of truth to this. It is a huge roll of the dice, no matter what QB you pick. Choosing at the top gets you a better chance of a hit, but there's no sure thing (and pairing that top pick with a lousy organization gets you nowhere -- Matthew Stafford, Phillip Rivers, etc...). Picks down in the draft get a slightly smaller chance of success as they go, but you still end up with some kind of chance.

Aaron Rogers fell precipitously but he has certainly panned out for Green Bay. Russell Wilson made it to the 75th pick of the draft. Tom Brady was possibly the biggest pick ever and he was in the sixth round (talk about a miniscule chance of success with a pick paying off... this is the lottery pick six winner here).

On the flip side of this discussion, you've got 2010's Sam Bradford, 2007's Jamarcus Russell, 2003's Carson Palmer, 2002's David Carr, 1999's Tim Couch, and 1990's Jeff George as #1 pick QBs who either never made the big time or who were out and out busts.

Still fortune favors the bold, right?

Yea...i looked at the first round picks for the last 20 years... its a recipe for qb purgatory for sure.... who was jake delhomme...nobody before he got a chance...whos to say PJ isnt it... i still believe build the core...and if you have any reasonable skill at QB and scheme you can build consistency...where you come out on the top end is coaching..

Giants were just weird.  They won the Super Bowl in 2007 and 2011....and defy normal standards/criteria of what you need to win a Super Bowl

Mannings got a weird resume/history.  Eli did way more to win his rings than Peyton come playoff time.   Peyton was way better than Eli yet Peyton’s defenses largely earned him his rings in his playoff runs to them.

Complete oddity. One of those two years they wouldn’t have even made the playoffs if Romo doesn’t throw a horrible pick six.

Wilson went in the 3rd due to height. NFL teams still desire height in a QB, but the stigma of height doesn't loom over a prospect like it used to. There's no way Murray and Mayfield go #1 overall ten years ago due to height alone. I realize Vick went #1 overall at 6' even but we've never seen another guy like Vick. He very well may have been the fastest player in the league at the time. Lamar Jackson is FAST but he's not the fastest guy in the league. There's a reason he didn't run at the Combine. They claim he ran a 4.34 at Louisville but if he could run a legit 4.34 he would've absolutely done that at the Combine. He wouldn't have had to wait until the last pick of the 1st to hear his name called had he done that.

Still not sure how I get poo'd on for this thread for bringing up a non biased different perspective that isn't titled "why is Hurney still here" but it is what it is lol

Looking at who gave you that, it is the fact that you brought up a non-biased perspective that was not part of their herd.

There are at least three groups of people who want a QB in the first round:

  • Those who say we should do so, but if we are not sold on who is available when we pick, we should look elsewhere
  • Those who say we must do so, and because of where we are expected to pick and the number available, somebody will be available that we need to grab
  • Those who say we must, or they will resign the Panther fandom, travel to Arizona, and throw their Panther's jerseys into the Grand Canyon.

Two of those three can carry on a reasonable conversation on the subject.

Hahah good point. Still figuring out who is who on here, thanks for the good laugh my guy.

Joe Flacco was one of best at this, he parlay that into the highest contract a couple different times.

    • Yep. Happens to a lot of talented kids. I just think a lot of people don't understand that just because this kid is super talented doesn't mean he's going to make it to the pros. Most of them won't. Some will get injured. Some will run into trouble off the court/field. Some won't put in the work. The catering greatly increases the odds of the latter two. Then most will simply just not be good enough to make it to the pros. Either way, it all adds up to a long shot and the kids need to have solid plan Bs. A few years back my HS had the #1 RB recruit on the nation. He originally committed to UGA but flipped to Bama and was getting decent playing time as a true freshman before obliterating his ankle. He was never the same again after that. Never made it to the pros. Not sure what happened to him but evidently he wasn't the brightest bulb and was basically just getting passed through school to stay academically eligible. I don't think he was a bad kid, never really heard anything like that. He just wasn't all that bright and all the eggs were in the football basket.
    • Our current hand is to pick up his fifth year option and then we have up to two more years to work on developing him and evaluating him.
    • That's just our current hand, its unfortunate. No easy solution and damned if you, damned if you don't.  Signing each is less wrong... Just wait until BY is up for a contract..... horn and icky will be nothing and each is super nerve wrecking...
