Hypothetical Bridgewater Trade

If the contracts made sense for Philly and Carolina, then to answer the question, yes I would rather have Wentz and Sewell than one of the rookie QBs. Obviously Philly wants to move his contract but as it stands now, idk who is anxious to pick it up. That said, who other than Hurney could make that 10 year extension happen?

I would take Carson Wentz. He's due 22-25 mil for the next 3-4 years, and is only guaranteed money next year.

Don't forget that his $33.8 mil in prorated bonus we wouldn't pay. That is permanently Eagles dead cap.

It's a gamble but it's a way higher upside gamble than Teddy was.

It's actually a very attractive contract for other teams. He would be pretty easy to trade, TBH.

After watching the Eagles win yesterday, I'd say it's more than likely that Jalen Hurts becomes the long term QB for the Philadelphia Eagles. That leaves them in a precarious situation with Carson Wentz, to whom the Eagles backed up the Brinks truck for. A thought came across my head after the game.

Should the Panthers not take a QB in this upcoming draft (for whatever reason) and if Wentz was willing to restructure his contract (to Bridgewater salary levels) would you trade Teddy Bridgewater for Carson Wentz straight up?

Philly gets a mentor that can work with Hurts on the finer parts of the game while the Panthers get a former MVP candidate reclamation project. Is Penei Sewell + Wentz better than a choice of Wilson/Lance/Trask? I don't know but it's an interesting thought.

Thought I might share a potential alternative solution for replacing Teddy besides drafting Wilson/Lance/Trask.

Thoughts?

Bill Barnwell floated the idea of the Eagles trading Wentz today. The most salient part of the article:

Whichever team that traded for Wentz would be acquiring a new quarterback on a four-year, $98.4 million contract. While that isn't exorbitant money, it would be picking up those $40.4 million in guarantees and basically be locked in to paying Wentz $47.4 million over the next two seasons. That's more than Teddy Bridgewater got over the first two years of his deal with the Panthers ($33 million guaranteed, $42 million practically guaranteed), and that contract came on a larger cap with no draft-pick compensation attached.

So the annual salary would be comparable but you'd be on the hook for at least 2 more years rather than being able to move onto a new qb in 2022 as we anticipate to do if we keep Bridgewater. I don't like it because it seems like a lateral move with a longer commitment and we're all chomping at the bit for our QB of the future. If the Eagles threw in significant draft pick compensation on top of that, maybe, but I doubt they'd offer up anything of value to make it worth our while.

It makes no sense for us based on the money we have tied up in Bridgewater and having what should be a top 10 pick in a loaded QB draft. But, it very well could make sense for some other team. I'd MUCH rather roll the dice on a 27 year old former MVP candidate rather than a 27 year old journeyman.
