Thankfully there are many answers that provide good reason to why:

  • Because after next year none are under contract with us...
  • the draft is loaded with QB talent from front to back.
  • Its been proven that having a capable backup is valuable in this league
  • We will have the extra picks this year
  • ITS CHEAPER

Teddy has a 3 yr contract.

PJ likely could be resigned for a reasonable contract...he has experience in the system and looks like he could develop into a good backup.

Later round QB's are a real crap shoot.  We have too many other needs IMO.

As for the rest of your comments.. I respect your opinion but Id prefer to take a shot at some of the talent coming out this year.

Trey Lance terrifies me.  I know Jeremiah said don't get hung up on his completion percentage . . . I'd say, don't get hung up on your own evaluation either.

A while back I compared college QB's who made it to the NFL with their NFL stats.  I can't remember exactly how many I looked at, but it was a good mix of 20-30 QB's.  In every case but one completion percentage from college goes DOWN in the NFL.

I also worry about Lance as a runner.  Running QB's often make big splashes in the NFL . . . but then the game takes a toll on them far in excess of what it does to a traditional pocket passer.  Our own Cam Newton "should" have been the guy to shake that label.  If ever there was a physical profile set up to shake that mold, surely it was Cam.  But he didn't.

I would far prefer a passer with some scrambling / improvising ability.  Look at players like Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers.  They use their legs to enable their arms.  That's how they beat you.

If Wilson overtakes Fields for some reason, I'm *fine* with that.  If we come away with either Wilson or Fields we've won the first round.

i read the jones kid from alabama is the most accurate passer in the draft

Mac probably throws to the most wide open WRs and those that create the best separation.      The problem with evaluating a lot of prior Bama QBs.  Especially in a year where the SEC is so weak.

If Brady leaves in the near future, which seems possible, what system do you think we are running?

I don't know that Matt Rhule is tied to a particular system as much as he was tied to Joe Brady.

With that said though, even if Brady leaves we'll still have a roster that's most ideally suited to a WCO so it's hard to imagine that changing.
