Is QB the right pick?

Oh yeah. It's just that easy.

Except it's not.

I was about to say that.  Generally, when a team is willing to let a quality OL hit the FA market, it is because they have an underlying injury issue, they are asking far more than they are worth in terms of performance, or their best years are behind them.  Rarely is it because they have somebody waiting in the wings to start, and in that case, one of the above three may still apply.  In some cases two of the three or all three.

Only one of those could apply to Moton, so let's hope shoring the line up starts there.

That just means there's more work to do.

We aren't locked in at picking in the top 10 and if we were we don't have to select an offensive lineman there.

Yeah obviously I know we aren't locked in yet for the top 10, we obviously can't predict the future and know where we'll select so we're talking based off right now.  And we won't select one because no other olineman is worthy of going in the top 10 other than Sewell...

What was Tom Brady? Russell Wilson?

I'm just trying to keep it to recent first rounders - 3rd picks. There will be of course a ton of gems throughout the years, but there are a lot more misses at 9th best QB than hits. Lol.

It's hard to say without knowing how things look. For instance, Sewell might be the best player in this draft, and he plays a position we desperately need help with.

Still, it's no secret that we need a QB, and there are four phenomenal talents in this draft. I wouldn't want to be the guy deciding on how to rank Lance and Wilson. I prefer Lance, but that's a tough call.

Who was it that wisely said "Drafting for need is a sure way to get in trouble."

BPA every time.

Probably not the same guy who admitted that the first three rounds of last year's draft were all need picks, but we were going BPA after that.

He won't be gone, I'm sure the team will use the franchise tag on him if they can't agree on a new deal.

People who are tuned into the team are saying this isn't likely to happen. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibilities but I would not be "sure" that the team would tag Moton.

If you go by 3rd QB drafted being the 3rd best QB, here's what history shows:

2020 - Justin Herbert was the 3rd best QB (6th overall)
2019 - Dwayne Haskins was the 3rd best (weak QB class) (15th overall)
2018 - Josh Allen was the 3rd best (7th overall)
2017 - Deshaun Watson was the 3rd best (12th overall)

So yeah... if there's a strong QB class and you believe in the 3rd best, you take him.

To build off of this I went back further and made note of where the 3rd QBs were taken in the draft:

2016 - Paxton Lynch (26th overall)

2015 - Garrett Grayson (75th overall)

2014 - Teddy Bridgewater (32nd overall)

2013 - Mike Glennon (73rd overall)

2012 - Ryan Tannehill (8th overall)

2011 - Christian Ponder (12th overall)

2010 - Jimmy Clausen (48th overall)

2009 - Josh Freeman (17th overall)

2008 - Brian Brohm (56th overall)

2007 - Kevin Kolb (36th overall)

2006 - Jay Cutler (11th overall)

2005 - Jason Campbell (25th overall)

2004 - Ben Roethlisberger (11th overall)

2003 - Kyle Boller (19th overall)

2002 - Patrick Ramsey (32nd overall)

2001 - Quincy Carter (53rd overall)

2000 - Chris Redman (75th overall)

Hard to compare with most of these years as this is a rare stacked QB class (most of the 3rd quarterbacks were taken in the 2nd/3rd round, and some in the late 1st). But of the classes that were more stacked (3rd QB taken in the top 12) almost all of the 3rd QBs wound up ranging from above average to elite, with the only exception being Christian Ponder who busted. The recent years you posted are definitely very promising.

At potentially #4 Lance is the only one that would make sense to me. NFL body, live arm. Not a tough call for me.

That logic falls in line with BPA and getting the 3rd best QB if possible.
