Well honestly, he never should have fired Gettleman at that point. Gettleman/Rivera teams were actually pretty successful for the most part. I still wonder how 2018 and 2019 would've gone if DG was in charge of the roster instead of Hurney. I think we make the playoffs and would've had our first back to back winning seasons in 17/18.

Easy to say this but would Beane be the same GM under us? He wouldn’t have had the same draft picks, cap room and no Allen as a QB. Without those three things he might not be as successful. Those free agents are a big part of buffalos success.

I had to go from the inspection station to Belk in Albemarle to get something for my wife that day and I bumped into Mike Turgovak (sp?).  I recall it was during a bye week and the Panthers were a disappointing 4-4 at the time.  I think I offended Turgovak.  He was there just roaming around like a zombie as his wife was shopping, and when I saw him, he was looking at trinkets--little unicorns and stuff.  I did not let that go.  He was nice, but I think I took it too far.  So later, i was telling my wife about it and my son said, "Oh, his daughter is in my class."  So I realized that he was not looking for porcelain unicorns for himself, but quite possibly his daughter.  I think he went to Green Bay the following year.  I like to think that I had nothing to do with that, but you never know.  It was a wild day.

An awful lot of this team's history is tied up in the relationship between Jerry Richardson and Marty Hurney.

That Richardson had full confidence in Hurney is pretty well documented, as is Marty's loyalty to Richardson. Hurney worked for years without a contract (unheard of) and as Darin Gantt said many times, Richardson basically considered Marty "GM for life", records be damned.

But then Richardson flew off the handle and wanted to fire Ron Rivera. Marty didn't want that to happen, so he offered to fall on the sword.

Richardson accepted the offer and hired a new GM, but given that GM actually had a mind of his own and wasn't just agreeing with everything Richardson said, the relationship wasn't the same.

And it didn't last. Again, records be damned.

With Gettleman gone, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Richardson was going to bring Marty back. The "interim" title was kind of a joke. It allowed Marty to stay in place without Richardson having to actually interview anybody else (and also get out of complying to the Rooney Rule).

The notion that Marty was brought on to find the next GM is exposed as phony by the fact that he never actually did any searching. After all, he was too busy running the team.

But there was a hiccup, in the form of Marty's ex-wife.

Her allegations were scandalous at a really bad time for that kind of scandal. Paired with accusations of violating the Rooney Rule from the Fritz Pollard Alliance (which, if we're being honest, were valid) the situation forced the team to have to actually do interviews. And they did, exclusively with minority candidates.

And then ultimately made Marty official.

Was coming back to Marty the plan all along when Richardson fired Gettleman? Probably. It's not exactly hard to believe.

But now Richardson is gone, and hopefully Marty will be too in the not so distant future.

Then maybe we can get to the business of building a contender.

Ah! I remember what it was, McD was hired but Beane wasn't brought on yet.  When Beane was hired, he made some off hand comment about that situation.  So it wasn't Beane but I did imagine he had a time machine lol.

This is why it is so baffling that JR's puppet is still around. Tepper is supposedly so brilliant and so analytical, yet here we are with Marty Hurney still wearing the GM title when no other team was willing to consider him in anyway after he was fired the first time.

Honestly, having typed that out, I think that might be exactly it. They already have a known willing puppet in place. Maybe this is Rhule's test drive for the control that he wants with Marty acting as a rubber stamp. If it ultimately doesn't work out, Marty falls on the sword again and they see if Rhule will work out with a real GM. I don't know, just spit balling here.

Hurney is the GM in the same vein as Tina Becker was the COO --- namely, not at all.

oh oh no go back to my post history I reamed Richardson for this at the time. It made no fuging sense to groom a GM for years and then to let him walk only to emotionally fire the guy in front of him months later. 

 

I remember some dude called me out for saying Richardson was a petulant child and basically told me I was a horrible person because of it was probably one of his kids.

It still blows my mind how poorly the panthers handled their GM situation and no one seems to notice

Hurney- fired because he is incompetent 

Beane- not hired despite him being groomed for years

Gettleman hired- outperforms Hurney in a vast majority of areas

Beane let to walk 

Gettleman -fired for an emotional reason, albeit the only right decision so far in this tree even if it was made for the wrong reason
