Let’s all take a deep breath and think about next season.

The offense in crunch time sucks.  It has all year.

But today made me unsure of the whole coaching staff.  Coming out of the bye, the team was completely unready to play.  Special teams sucked.  Offense sucked.  Defense sucked.  And against a bad team.  Not sure how that his an improvement over any of the previous regimes.

Well, it's also a much less talented team than Rivera or Fox typically had to deal with. I am encouraged that we are always close. That is a net positive, IMO.

On the defensive side maybe.  But John Fox made the NFC championship game in 2005 with a offense that consisted of Steve Smith, Jake Delhomme, and some guys whose names I can't remember on offense.

Yeah but that has happened with a bunch of our opponents. We play the the level of our opponent, no matter how good or bad. It's very strange.

Just shows you that most teams in the NFL are pretty close in talent and coaching. It’s those intangible qualities that produce a winner.

Things look bleak right now. The Panthers are getting worse as the season goes along and there is very little hope of winning another game this season.

And that’s not by accident. The team is just not any good aside from a handful of promising players. And the players and coaches both know there isn’t any reason to win any more games aside from personal accolades and morale boosts.

So as a fan, I would like to take this time to take a deep breath and start thinking about next season.

Next season, we will have a talented rookie QB to cheer for.

Next season, Christian McCaffrey will be back.

Next season, the defense will be better with more experience and more draft picks.

Next season, this team will win some close games.

This is the only way to stay positive right now.

I dont think there will be a rookie available by the time we pick that will truly be a franchise guy.

I do have a feeling Wentz will be better once he leaves Philly...but he scares the crap out of me too.

One writer theorized that the Colts could trade for him and reunite him with Frank Reich.

This year could not be going any better.  Really.

We didn't find our QB last offseason.  Fine, because it looks like we'll be in great position to get one of the top 4 guys, and it seems as though this is a really good year to need a QB.

When you look at our season after it's over, we'll look back and say "Huh, you know what?  A healthy CMC, a few good draft picks and a real offseason for the players and staff and we'll win a few of those close games next season"

Yes, it's early in the process.  But this is what a rebuild actually SHOULD look like.  We aren't there, but you can actually see the building blocks.  High effort.  Production from more than just your starters.  A young staff learning the ropes along with their players.

Relax and enjoy the ride.  Losing does suck, but it seems there is real hope ahead.

I’m finally coming around to this view. There were some fun moments especially early in the season. I’m glad they could finally win a game in Atlanta, where they hadn’t won since 2014. Almost beating KC with all those trick plays was fun too. But in the end this was a bad bad team that overachieved by being more competitive than expected.

I’m hopeful next season will be better. But I also know after decades of being a Panthers fan it could definitely get worse too despite the optimism.

What could we seriously get for Teddy in a trade?  If Brees retires, would the Saints trade for him? Washington? Chicago? 49ers? Patriots?

We could probably get a 5th round pick since his contract is pretty easy to cut after 2021. So it doesn’t really make any sense to get rid of him when the Panthers can and probably will dump him next offseason

But the tea leaves say there may not be another NFL season.

If you thought this season was going to be positive you probably don’t know much about football. You don’t lose a massive amount of players, have a rookie NFL HC with many new staff members and add Covid into the mix and still expect miracles. It’s called re-building for a reason.
