Fire Marty hurney again

I really hate seasons like this. “Be patient.” “We’re rebuilding....” Nah, I hate this crap. Just thought I’d get that out there...moving on...

So here we are, 4 weeks left in the season. We’re 2 games back from a Wild Card, sTAINTs have already clinched a playoff spot and are a win or Tampa loss away from clinching the division. We don’t have any tie breakers to knock anyone currently in the playoffs out. Tampa, Minnesota, and Arizona would all have to go on epic losing streaks while we would have to win 4 straight just to have a chance, and please don’t let the real possibility of a win against the Donkeys this weekend fool you into the idea we still have a chance. This is simply objective truth. 

As to the draft, we are currently sitting at #7. Our Strength of Schedule is tied with Atlanta. That means we’d have a coin flip if the season ended today. Our SoS is nearly identical for the games remaining. Have I mentioned I hate the Failcons yet? No, well...anyway...we’re not likely to get a better pick than 7th. The teams with lower picks are in fact really crappy teams. It’s more likely we end up winning a couple more, end with a 6-10 record and mange to bust our way out of the top 10. Why is that a problem? Well, I’d like to see us trade down to build some draft capital. It is MUCH easier to do that with single digit draft picks and still get high quality players in the 1st round that we can keep for the first 5 years of a players career due to that 5th Year Option in the CBA. This is another huge mistake that Marty Hurney fails to utilize when it comes to drafting players.

So, actually nothing to do with Hurney, you want us to lose out and through some miracle of stupidity by two other teams end up with two late first round picks?  I mean . . . good luck with that.  Every team in the league would love that.  Has nothing to do with where you are drafting.  In fact, if you DO somehow end up with two first round picks, Hurney is probably the guy you want making those picks in all fairness.

We have 67 million in dead cap, over half of it from Dave Gettleman contracts. You can't compete with 35% of your salary cap wiped away by players not playing for the team. How you guys are upset we didn't make the playoffs is beyond me. We never were this year or next with so much dead money on the cap.

Being upset about not being a playoff team this year is unrealistic, but I'm all in on the fire Hurney (again) train.

To our credit, we didn't actually rehire those guys after firing them the first time.

If there is another incident in NFL history where a team rehired a failed GM, I don't know of it.

That article about our capologist from Pittsburgh was interesting in that he said (paraphrasing) "In Pittsburgh, we planned for this year--we were not thinking about the future."

They difference is, they won rings and we had high caps and never did.  We were never consistent winners.  Pittsburgh was/is.

I'm not a Hurney stan, but I am going to play Devil's advocate.  

And again, none of us fans truly know the inter workings of the Panthers' power dynamics and therefore who should receive praise and or criticism, but an outside observer could look at the work Hurney has done over the past year quite favorably.

Already, it can be said this year's draft class has been a massive success.  Chinn is on his way to winning DROY.  The rest of the draft class is contributing heavily, and we hopefully got 3 long-term starters (Brown, Chinn, YGM) and maybe another in Pride.  There are also good rotational pieces in Pride, Franklin, & Roy.

This draft class may end up rivaling 2001 (Morgan, Jenkins, Smitty) as the best in franchise history.

Robby Anderson was an incredible signing, and Juston Burris & John Miller have been solid.

Of course there were misses in Stephen Weatherly & Eli Apple, but those have been overshadowed by the superstar emergence of Burns and the pickup and play of Rasul Douglas.

And while we haven't won a lot of games, we have been competitive in spite of an extreme amount of turnover, limited offseason and no preseason.

So ultimately we're going into 2021 with a high draft pick and absorbed the vast majority of the dead cap this year.

Now don't get me wrong.  While I certainly don't think Hurney has been the failure that many do (he had a major hand in building 2 Super Bowl rosters), but given his entire body of work, I'm hard-pressed to believe people are going to riot if he's let go, me included.

I personally think Hurney will be involved in the Panthers in some capacity for many years to come, but it is obvious he does not have the same amount of responsibility or authority as he once did.

Despite his flaws, Hurney has a remarkable lack of ego for a NFL GM, he is a noted consensus builder, and he has been loyal to the Panthers.  Regardless of what somebody might think or write behind a keyboard, those are admirable traits in both a professional and personal capacity.

I think both David Tepper and Matt Rhule are intelligent men, and they would have been foolish not to be skeptical of Hurney from the offset.  But both men have wanted to continue to work with him, and IMO for the reasons above.

Anyway, Hurney has and will continue to be a topic of conversation and lightning rod for Panthers fan.  I'm also not naive enough to believe this isn't by design for Tepper & Rhule. 

They continue to enact their plan, and they have a built-in scapegoat if needed.  From a business perspective in terms of managing expectations, it makes a lot of sense.

   Who is Gettleman responsible for besides Kalil? The Turner restructuring? The Luke restructuring? Reid? Kk? Olsen? Roberts?

Bingo. I was about to say, if anything I'd be looking to replicate the Steelers' approach seeing as how they've been so successful and all. It always seems like we're perpetually building for a future that never arrives.

Most don't get second chances with a different team, much less with the same team.  

I can't think of it happening much with any sports organization.  Maybe the Yankees.  I know Steinbrenner hired and fired Billy Martin several times, not sure about others in the front office.
