I'm confused asl. How do we only have 20 Million?! Weren't we carrying a stupid number for dead cap so we'd have money to spend this year? I had that thought this whole year and I feel like I just got the Jelly of the Month for a Christmas bonus

That’s assuming the cap hits the floor of 175 but news is trending that it will only go to 195.

Have any of you LOOKED at what QB's are making?  TB is dead in the middle.  We got an average starting QB for the price of . . . an average starting QB.  We're really only on the hook for two years.  If we get our guy this offseason, and he's ready to start, great.  He'll have TB to teach him the offense and mentor him for a year after which we cut Teddy.  If our guy is more developmental, we let him sit behind Teddy in 2021 and start in 2022.  We can make the decision the summer before as to whether we need Teddy to stick around or not.

We NEED a veteran QB in that room when we bring in our guy.  The only thing worse than a rookie QB in the NFL is a rookie QB with no one to mentor him.  TB doesn't have a problem above the shoulders.  He's the ideal guy, and we've got him on a deal that pays him for what he is right now, and we can dump him after next season for almost nothing.

I don't think TB is a guy we can make a run with.  Unless our defense goes from "ok" to "all time" we're going to need a QB.  When we find one, we need someone to mentor him.  In looking at the FA's available last year, TB was the best choice for what we needed.

So two years and 42M to be a coach and friend to an unknown QB is worth it? At the cost of how many quality starters? Was having Kyle Allen at 1M or Andy Dalton at 3M any different than what you have now. Why is TB a better “mentor” than Dalton?  TB was a mistake. They gambled on him becoming something he’s never been.  Now his best quality is QB coach? That’s much more important than multiple future starters. Whatever helps I guess?

If the cap hits the floor, the Saints would have to cut the following players to get under the cap:

Brees, Alexander, Ramczyk, Lattimore, Jenkins, Armstead, Easton, Brown, Hill and Sanders.

Thats two QBs and 9 starters, including top two CBs, both tackles, ect. And even after that they would have no room for rookies or any free agents.

Well, if we have an estimated $10M in cap space after signing draft picks and money set aside as the article claims, and we plan on cutting Short and Weatherly, it would seem that both Moton and Curtis could be re-signed. We wouldn't have much wiggle room elsewhere to sign someone like Douglas (which I hope we can do), but maybe the cap ends up a little higher and we can squeeze all three in.

If we can draft Parsons or Surtain II/Farley/Wade in R1 and an OL in R2 or R3 I think we ride with Teddy one more year. A healthy CMC with Robby-DJ-Samuel and a cohesive OL plus a solid, promising rookie should elevate Brady's offense next year.

Guys, we won an extra game this season while flushing away a ton of cap room and flexibility over this and next offseason.  Guys...he's middle of the pack, and that's all we are paying him.

Yea, I'd rather have the cap space, the comp picks, and the chance to grab one of the top 2 QB's in this upcoming QB top heavy draft.

Marty. Hurney.

To add:  We needed a rebuild.  Some wanted a retooling.  Smart posters said it was a half measure and would likely fail.  It has so far failed, and will likely continue to do so for at least 1 more season.

I'd much prefer a premier LT to the 4th most coveted QB.

I'm with you.  If somehow Sewell dropped to us for reasons other than his physical well being or a pending felony sentence, it would be hard not to pull the trigger.  I don't think he gets past Cincinnati, assuming their draft position does not change, but they are the Bengals for a reason.

Outside of Trevor, he's my favorite...to be fair, I don't really start digging in until after the NFL season, but man an elite LT that could stay on the field could do wonders for this offense.

Within the last few days I saw him listed as the #2 prospect behind Trevor.  He is an immediate difference maker at LT for somebody.

As for the cap room, as a few others have said, a lot of people miss the point that a $23M decrease in the cap per team also will impact player salaries in the short-term.  That is almost a $750M decrease across the league.  So, if you are planning on the conservative side for what we have in the piggy bank to spend, understand what we are buying is going to be marked down since there are fewer available dollars to chase.

It sounds like the cap may be something nearer to flat, but if not, I would expect to see a lot of 1 and 2 year deals.  Agents probably would not want anything longer, hoping things recover by then.

Good stuff form Darin Gantt.

Ive done it a few times, but Saints are not is terrible shape with that 90 million over. Failcons I feel have the worst deal. Saints can trade/cut/retire their way to the cap. Failcons have to lose real talent, where the saints can reload.

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
