Article from Panthers on next year and the cap “Room to Work”

Paradis will be here next year.  You won't replace him for 5 million, and then he's gone for zero dead the next year.  Plus he hasn't been as awful this year as last year.  In effect, we have bigger problems than Paradis, limited cap room and draft picks.  You just can't replace everyone you want in one or even two years.  It takes time to fix your roster.

If we designate Short as post June 1, we actually save 14 million.  He's gone, for sure.

Even if Paradis plays out his contract, the Panthers still have to eat 3.6M in dead cap in 2022. He has two voidable years at 1.8M each.

saints never seem to have any cap issues....we need to figure it out

They are potentially $90M over if the cap drops to $175M.  Even if it stays the same (~$195M), they are way over.

Loomis has kicked the cap down the road as long as possible for the tail end of Brees' career.  The Saints have a deep roster, and I'm not naive enough to believe they will completely fall apart, but they are definitely going to lose some significant talent this offseason when you look at all their pending free agents.

The Falcons are in pretty bad shape too cap-wise too.

And the Bucs are putting their hopes in 2021 in a 44 year-old Brady.

I feel much better about our overall situation as a team going into next year than this year.  No reason we can't compete for the division again next year.

They are failing to take 1 dynamic into consideration:  When the listed teams start purging their rosters and the cap is dropping, the free agent market will be loaded with talent and prices will drop accordingly.

When the supply exceeds the demand, in other words.  So I think we tag Moton (his salary will be cheaper than the 2020 market value) and make Samuel an offer with the allowance to explore the free agent market.  I imagine a #3 receiver/swiss army knife type will not get what he hoped to get--priorities will lead teams to address other positions.

I would low ball Samuel and tag Moton.  Once Moton sees the market for RTs, THEN I negotiate a long-term deal with him.  Samuel at $5-6m and leave it on the table during the first week of free agency.   After that, remove it and renegotiate for a lower amount.

Yes, we could lose Samuel doing this, but we have some people on the roster who may be able to fill those shoes should he slip away.  We have NOBODY to take over at RT, and with needs at LT and G for 2020 (Paradis will stay for one more season with so many rookies expected to start), Moton is BY FAR the obvious choice.

For all you Person-following, Chicken Little, click-bait munchers, this is the deal facing the Panthers.  Not some "30% chance" Nostra Dummass stupidity.  They have choices and room.  Keeping Samuel will be difficult, but it can be done--if he is prioritized.  Frankly, we could probably use the $$ he would cost somewhere else and get more bang for the buck.

I do suspect that the cap changes will hurt Samuel specifically in free agency.  Teams just won't have the money they normally would.  The only way he gets really paid this offseason is if some team out there views him as a true #2.  As good as he's been this year, I still don't think he's shown enough to make anyone believe he's a 2.  He's finally being used in his best role, #3 / slot and he's realizing his potential.

I could see Gettleman up in NY scooping him up this offseason honestly.

As I mentioned in another post, cutting Short, Weatherly, and Palardy saves $18.5M.  Enough needed to re-sign Moton.  For Short, we have Zach Kerr, Weatherly hasn't done anything so he's easily replacable, and for Palardy, we have Charlton.  Letting go of 3 players who haven't done anything and we already have replacements in order to re-sign one of the best RT's in the NFL? Easy decision.

The line about Teddy’s contract being something the club “doesn’t immediately regret” is very telling IMO. I was expecting them to paint a picture of Teddy’s awesomeness and career best (low bar, I know) numbers this year. But they didn’t

I read it as... We're going to draft a QB if the right guy is there, but if we have to roll with Teddy again in 2021, we're OK with that.

"That's not to say they won't scout this year's incoming class of quarterbacks, but there's a general sense that Bridgewater is capable of leading the team if the right option doesn't present itself in the draft."

Yup, read it as that as well...if the guy they want for a QB isn't there, they'll pick the best player available, not mad at that...I just hope it's a OL or another defensive player.
