I would consider Colbert to be potentially an available GM candidate. There's a reason he only signed a 1 year deal with them last offseason... Don't think it's very likely, but I do think it's definitely a realistic possibility that Tepper lures him here.

I'm not sure Colbert will continue to want to be a full-time GM and I think Tepper wants someone younger.

Ive said before though that my ideal fit for Colbert would be to make him a highly paid consultant, hand him the keys to everything and let him remake the organization however he sees fit.

The Broncos are up for sale - so I figure all of their staffing movements are delayed until that's sorted.

Not quite yet.

But you're right about the instability being a good thing for Elway.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Falcons would like to interview Saints VP Terry Fontenot for their GM job.

Fontenot has been in the Saints' front office for the last 16 seasons. He's one of the first names linked to Atlanta since ex-GM Thomas Dimitroff was fired. Former Texans GM Rick Smith and Rams director of college scouting Brad Holmes are also candidates for the Falcons.

This is what I have wanted since Tepper bought the team, and prior.

We need a football guy to shape the future of this franchise, Tepper is not that person, and Marty has proven time and again that he has no forward thinking ability.

Colbert would have been perfect.

Was Smith the guy who got replaced while he was caring for a sick wife? I'm thinking that was him.

I did see both of those names listed in one article but tried to concentrate on people whose names came up multiple times.

(still wound up being a long list)

There were lots of rumors that Tepper was courting Colbert. It's definitely not hard to believe.

Could still be possible I suppose, but I'm less likely to buy it at this point.

I'm trying to think of what team would be the most desirable for the trendy younger coaching type hire.

The Texans with Watson seem like an easy choice but O'Brien really peeled the core away from that squad.  I don't even know who their main guys are after Watson & Watt.  Jordan Reid isn't that special, Zach Cunningham above average.  That'd be an interesting team to build though. They need a special weapon to help out Watson, an OL & an entire defense minus Watt.

Jets & Jags are back at square one and need to find a guy for their new young guns.

If Atlanta goes Trask, that would be an interesting spot.  He could sit behind Matt Ryan for a year while they retool that roster.

It’s the Chargers if it becomes available.

Franchise QB:  check

Top skill position guys:  check

Couple studs on defense:  check

If Lynn is canned, some rookie HC is walking into a 10-6 record next year without really needing to do much in the offseason.

That very well may be the answer.  Ownership is a mess, but that is sort of a common denominator in the organizations we have on the carousel.

Atlanta's ownership is the least dreadful, but then you look at their cap situation and roster age.  While the 2021 hole is nowhere near as deep as the Saints (although their number is based on only 32 players), 2022 is pretty similar if things stay the same, and they have an old roster, meaning "ride it out" is not really an option.

The Chargers have roughly half their cap tied up in seven players, but they have a young roster, are in a comfortable cap position overall, and, as you said, they have some important pieces in place.  They look like they could be a coach away from being on the upswing, while the others on our list range from being on a definite downward trend to rock bottom.

If Jerrah Jones does something very uncharacteristic and admits he made a mistake, the Cowboys are one of those teams who look like rock bottom.  They could be rock bottom with a QB (carrying his second tag), but still rock bottom.

Stephen Jones at least seems to have something of a decent football mind. At the very least, he's probably smarter than his dad on that front.

The Cowboys will probably continue to just flounder around unless Stephen someday decides to lock his dad in the closet and tell everybody he's in charge now.
