So he was injured every year but 2017 when his coach wouldn’t let him kick it 50 yds. When was he ever a “beast”?

When was he a beast?

Lets see here...maybe when he won the game for us on a record tying FG against NY.

So now it’s specifically ONE kick. A great one but not a beast when healthy as described. At about 5x what Slye makes. The Panthers are paying Gano 2.5x what Slye is making now. This year and next. To kick for another team.

You asked for specifics and I gave it to you. Slye is mediocre which is how we are paying him. As a result we are 1 score from winning or tying 6 out of our 8 losses many of which he missed crucial kicks. It’s not all on him but my point was that when Gano was put in those situations most on here had tunnel vision regarding the loss if he missed the kick and shouldered the blame on him. Folks didn’t give him the benefit of the doubt like they are with Slye.

Maybe it’s because when you’re paying a PK that much, you expect a level of consistency. He’s being paid to be better than a rookie making nothing. That’s where the difference lies. Gano cost this team how many games in 2016? And still was brought back at the expense of a cheap, very good option. Wasn’t ever even above average before that.

I'm not defending his lack of clutch ability but to look at all angles....what are the distances of those attempts? Just trying to understand those

I've seen people here mention the two 60 plus attempts shouldn't be held against him. Thats fair....though when you take those 2 out he's 1 of 4 from 50+ which is still one of the worst percentages in the NFL.

I think a few were so long he needed a golfer's distance scope to see the goal posts.   One was a blind shot due to the earth's arc...Slye is young, and kickers tend to get more ice water in their veins and become more consistent as they age.

Seriously--this may seem XFLish, but I have a radical theory that a +55 yarder should be worth more than 3 points.  I would like to see them worth 4 points.  That would change so much game strategy. Have you ever noticed how often the 3/4 point differential impacts the coach's decisions? When a FG counts 3, the TD is more of an advantage, but if a FG can be worth 4, it is a bigger risk because the odds of hitting it are lower and the opponent gets the ball where the kick was missed.  When the gods decided on 3 points, it was a consolation prize, and the opponent got the ball after a missed FG at the 20- that changed eventually.

As it is, I would rather defend a 3 point lead late in a game than a 4, 5, or 6 point lead because the other team plays for the tie if you have a 3 point lead, but they play for the win if the lead is between 4-6 points.  However, if you know the opposition has a 4-point option, you would be forced to play less conservatively, especially if they can get to the 38 yard line and kick a FG (55 yarder) without worrying about giving the ball to the defense at the kick spot if you miss---So if I am down by 3, I probably find it easier (vs. prevent defenses) to go for the 55-yarder and game winner than a tie in some situations.  Am I out of my mind?

He's not the best kicker in the league, but he's being asked to do a heck of a lot.  Here are his splits by distance for the past two years:

  Games 0-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50+ Scoring   Scoring Kickoffs Punting
Year Age Tm Pos No. G GS FGA FGM FGA FGM FGA FGM FGA FGM FGA FGM FGA FGM Lng FG% XPA XPM XP% KO KOYds TB TB% KOAvg Pnt Yds Lng Blck Y/P AV
Career       28       15 13 12 12 19 15 17 9 63 49 56 77.8% 63 57 90.5% 134 8504 122 91.0% 63.5           4
2019 23 CAR   4 16 0     5 4 5 5 11 8 11 8 32 25 55 78.1% 35 31 88.6% 70 4503 66 94.3% 64.3           4
2020 24 CAR   4 12 0     10 9 7 7 8 7 6 1 31 24 56 77.4% 28 26 92.9% 64 4001 56 87.5% 62.5

Last year, he was actually pretty darn good from 50+.  I think you take 8 of 11 from those distances pretty much every day.  8 of 11 from 40-49 is more concerning but not absolutely terrible.  And then he missed a few chippies (1 field goal from 20-29 and 4 XPs).  All in all, not fantastic, but not terrible either.

This year, he's been slightly better close in (still missed a chippy and a few XPs), much better from intermediate range (only one miss from 40-49), and then he's been abysmal from 50+, granted if you take out the 65 and 67 yard attempts, he's 1/4 instead (still bad).  I don't know how much of that is just reversion to the mean, since he was quite good last year.

All in all, that's not the profile of a kicker that you need to worry all that much about considering the state of the roster.  We could certainly improve at the position, but we would be better off sinking resources into other positions of need.

He actually had some of his best years prior to 2016 before dealing with a couple of injury concerns. Now he seems to be balling out again. If we are going to be upset at the kicker situation I get the Butker argument a little but that was still a tough decision as he was an unproven rookie when he got sniped off the PS.

That may be true, but an inaccurate kicker during clutch time is a huge problem!

He's really only been consistently inaccurate from 50+ this season. And he's been asked to kick some ridiculous FGs at the end of games that no kicker should be asked to kick. Bottom line is this team is f*cking garbage and bitching about the kicker missing some super long FGs is the least of our worries.

Still seeing a lot of excuses for a guy when Gano didn’t get a pass and was arguably more consistently clutch in tight game scenarios.

Hint: There's probably a lot of overlap between the people calling for Slye's head and the ones who always called for Gano's

This.

If he's 14 of 21 and all 21 attempts are in excess of 50, I'll take it all day.

His issue is accuracy though. He cant hit jack from the left hash now its starting to trend the right hash too. He often kicks way to low due to overcompensation(Not blaming him for the block Sunday, that was a gap protection issue), or way to high due to power that often sail directly over an upright I can count half a dozen this season that did that and were counted, if those missed he'd be the worst kicker in the league in every category hands down. These aren't wind skewed kicks either, he does it in domes too.

He's 25th in FG%, 21st in XP% and 24th in 50+%. He's basically guaranteed to miss 1 out of every 4 kicks a game averaging his complete history, no matter where he's kicking from.

I like the dude, he's got spirit but he's going to have to seriously get his accuracy up in the off-season or we'll have to bring in a new kicker.
