No more defending Teddy...

WOW!!

Teddy is a great person but he just doesn't have NFL caliber arm strength. Other QB's have other strengths to over come this but teddy just doesn't show those skills on a constant bases to be look at as a long term starter in the NFL. As long as he's our starter I will root for him but the fantasy that we could have a cheap long term starter in teddy no longer exist.

So how does that give it exclusivity from being a gunslinger? My understanding of that description has always been more of a base-line description for a "good enough" QB for any particular offense.  They can manage the game, grasp the playbook, execute most of the time.  I don't want to get caught in semantics since these are very loose terms.  What is your view on it?

I'm just getting at wanting someone who can improvise and evade.  We don't need a running quarterback but one that has that elusiveness, extra pzaz, grit, intangible element.  Teddy doesn't have it.

A game manager is a guy who gets the ball to his playmakers and lets them do their job. They tend to be very smart and efficient. Brady, Brees and Montana are / were all game managers, and two of the three played in West Coast systems.

A gunslinger is a guy who takes a lot of risks, often more balls than brains. They tend to be streaky and sometimes inconsistent, capable of throwing a laser accurate pass on one play followed up by a "what the hell was that" pass on the next. Brett Favre is probably the quintessential example of this type of player.

You can win with a gunslinger type, and they're certainly exciting to watch, but the most consistent winners tend to be guys like Brady and Brees.

K, so that's pretty much my understanding.  The thing is, I think that spectrum is one that's been squashed by the Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilsons, Pat Mahomes, Big Bens, heck, even Josh Allens of the world.  They have the gunslinger gene but are still able to get into that game management mode on a situational basis.  Josh Allen is still working on it.  It's the understanding of when to turn on the gunslinger mode.  Situational intelligence comes into play here.  When you find a guy that has that and can elevate the talent, it doesn't take away that they can be game managers, or that they can become gunslingers.  I just prefer on a bit more on the gunslinger side.  Improv, extending playsin a game of chess when we're not running the quick plays/needing bigger chunks.

I don't think these, let's call them football genes requires a particular offense, just smart decisions making and knowing when to turn the right switch on.

Kyle Allen was better.

No GM in their right mind will take on his 20 mill a year price tag.

It was a bad signing by us. One of Hurneys worst. A bad experiment. No one will want an injury prone noodle arm who chokes in the clutch.

Right now..

what starter is he better then?  Darnold?

When you take the salary into consideration, he’s worse than Randy Fasani.

People also make the mistake of thinking any quarterback who runs is a gunslinger.

Again, not true.

Hell, even Brady runs sometimes. He's just not somebody you take seriously as a run threat.

Yep, agree and don't think anyone is in here.  It's not about being a running QB, it's about being elusive hence why I'm mentioning the likes of Rodgers, Big Ben, Mahomes, it's have the discipline to know when to turn the switch to either side.  I just don't think a gunslinger v. game manager is this black & white thing.  The game has evolved, player types have evolved and I want a guy has it---who knows when and how to turn on that gunslinger gene.

You have to also pair it with the system.

If you're running a Coryell, you probably want a gunslinger.

If you're running a West Coast attack (which we are) you want a game manager.

E-P? Probably also a game manager but you can get away with a gunslinger too.
