QB is the smallest pool to pick from (other than kicker) and the obviously most valuable position. Teams will always take from the top of their class comparatively just given supply and demand, which of course will skew inferences about the success of  “first round qbs.”

Lost in this “franchise Qb” obsession, at least for purposes of this thread, seems to be the OP’s point that a top 10 defense also is critical to success. Where does that leave us? It’s all relative to having a balanced team.

Were exactly where we started. The formula is the same: Some combination of BPA + positional value weighted by team need (which itself depends on depth, scheme, salary cap...etc). Application of that formula to any given prospect is going to vary by person based on their evaluation of that player (whether the player is the “BPA”) and their evaluation of the existing roster (the weight attached to the positional value).
