Lawrence and the Jets...

I would be 100% ok with giving them our entire draft this year for him.

Trevor plus the guys we have would still make for some decent ball.

A team would have to give up more than a a years worth of draft picks to get Trevor. Perhaps 3 First rounds, 2 seconds, 2 thirds and maybe take on a bad contract. If a team thinks he's in the same breath as Manning, Elway or Luck then that makes that decision easy.

Eli and Elway both played 4 years in college and had to enter the draft.

Lawrence can decide to stay in school without even mentioning the NFL. Why go out of your way to sh!t on an NFL team, regardless of how bad the organization is, when there's no need to do it?

Elway was a hellava pitcher and threatened to go to the Yankees if Baltimore selected him.

I'm not a big fan of players having that kind of control over the draft process (what if all of the top 30 prospects said no to the team with the top pick?) but if this winds up being the case and Lawrence comes out but won't play for the Jets, we need to be all over getting that 1st overall pick and taking him.

Jets aren't as hopeless as people think. They have young talented receivers, a ton of cap room, a young franchise LT, and another first round pick. They just need to fire their GM and HC.

If they keep Adam Gase, then yeah he should stay in school though. Or maybe pull an Eli. Heard theres a pro football team in the Carolinas with a need at QB....

That's just idiotic. If you feel the need to force a list of potential coordinators on a coach, then you're talking to the wrong candidate. Anyone who would accept such restrictions isn't worth hiring and is almost certainly destined to fail anyway.

I think the problem with that particular version of the Jets leadership was that they believed they were smarter than they actually were.

Unfortunately, we're familiar with that sort of thing here too.

If it’s the case good for him I wouldn’t want to go to a toxic franchise either. If I was a fan of the Jets I’d hate him the way I was mad about Luck at the time. But sometimes there’s a silver lining- we got Cam. Everyone ended up happy.

If that happened maybe the Jets would take a look at themselves and change something.

If I’m the Jets I would call his bluff and draft him. Make him sit out half the year and if he still refuses to show up then trade his rights at the deadline for a huge haul to a team that needs a QB that is out of 1st pick range.

An NFL team can only draft him if he declares. Guy doesn't declare for the draft and announces he's going to stay in school for another year, NFL teams can't decide to draft him anyway.

The other issues are if he's not under contract he's not tradeable, and if he refuses to sign and sits the entire season he's goes back into the next draft and Jets get no compensation.

This is exactly what the Buc's did with Bo Jackson -- Bo went off and played baseball, and played it well -- Buc's got bupkiss.

The Raiders then picked up Bo in the 7th round the following season...the rest is history.

I recall a #1 rated college QB who was eligible to come out when the Panthers had the #1 pick.  Just a few days or weeks before the deadline for declaring, Jerry Richardson had the famous "pie chart" presser, the one where he demonstrated how owner centered he was--the one where he hit on Morgan Fogherty and trashed Darrin Gant.  I was watching it, thinking, "Luck is going back to Stanford after this circus."

Then there is the Eli/Archie Manning, Giants/Chargers situation.

Then there was John Elway threatening to play baseball instead of playing for the Colts...

So it has happened before.

Nice research, Scot.

The owner of the Bucs, at the time, screwed Bo out of his last year of eligibility by flying his private jet to go talk to Bo, promising him it was not an NCAA violation to do so. Bo swore he'd never play for the Bucs as a result.

Jim Kelly listed the Buffalo Bills as one of 3 teams he'd never play for, too. It's why he ultimately ended up in the USFL before joining the Bills down the road.

Did you think I had implied this was unprecedented?

For the record, I remember all of those.

So is there any actual evidence of Lawrence not wanting to play in NYJ or is this just conjecture? He could just enjoy playing at Clemson and he's probably treated like a monarch on the campus.

Same for the claim about Luck skipping out on us in 2012, is there any real evidence? I'm not so sure that the Colts were necessarily the most appealing option for a QB either following the Peyton fiasco. I didn't follow the draft process and off-season very closely back then though, so I honestly wouldn't know.

Selfishly, I’d love it if he stayed at school. It would be fun to see him play again live and it would put our chance at getting him above 0%. I think he’ll either stay in school or play for the Jets. I don’t think he’s come out and tell them they need to trade the pick. Staying at Clemson is a better option than sitting at home.

well Clemson does have a recent history of first round players opting to stay at Clemson.  Lawrence has seemed to pull back on his initial take of definitely going to the draft.

but yeah, I think Lawrence realizes how going to a trainwreck can kill a career before it starts and is wanting to see how things pan out.

You can't fault the kid for loving the school but I'm in the camp that if you can make money go make your money. You've already made Clemson a ton of it.
