Outside of a QB who do you have and why?

This. Constantly spending huge resources at LB and RB hasn't worked out well for us as a franchise, yet here we have many Panthers fans wanting to spend another high first round pick on a LB.

Luke,  TD, Beason and Morgan didn't work out well?  Shaq not so much but our 1st round LBs have been stellar.

Everyone wants a QB and rightly so but our chances of getting one of the top tier QB is slim.

This is far from true. Our chances of getting Lawrence or Fields are very slim and yes they're the clear top 2, but Lance and Wilson are both in that top tier of QB prospects in this draft, for sure. And both of those guys are very much in play.

I like the Parsons kid but unless he is BPA at the time we pick, no way I make another LB pick. I know we need one but fug me running we gotta eventually pay attention to positional value.

Investing in LB has not been one of our problems by any means. Our defense was mostly great from 2013-2017 largely because of Luke and TD. Agree on RB, but paying LB or drafting them high hasn't hurt us at all for the most part. That being said, investing in the WRONG LB in Shaq, has hurt us. Not because he's a LB but because he's just not that good and is very replaceable. Not a fan of drafting a LB this year, but if we could get another Luke or TD caliber LB in the draft, I wouldn't be against it.

You're looking too small. Look at the bigger picture. We've had Sam Mills, Dan Morgan, Jon Beason, Luke Kuechly. No one in the league can match our talent at MLB since we entered the league, yet we have a losing record as a franchise and non-pass rushing LBs are increasingly less vital than they used to be. One of the reasons we've never had sustained success and have a losing record as a franchise is because we have refused to adapt as the game of football evolves. Dumping all your resources into RB and LB is being stuck in the 1980s.

Again, looking too small. Investments aren't made in a vacuum. There's opportunity cost there as well. Those resources spent on LBs (and RBs) could have been spent on players with higher positional value. One of the reasons why we've always sucked at OL and DB is because of those resources tied up at LB and RB. We've been focusing on the wrong spots and our overall record reflects that.

The evaluation of those players were spot on and they played great for us.  So your change your evaluation process and get those players that fit the mold of the 21st Century.

At the right positions. Every time you spend highly valued resources in the form of a draft pick or salary cap at a non-premium position, you could've also spent those resources at a position of higher value. I'd rather have a decent MLB and an elite pass rusher rather than vice versa, but you sure as hell don't settle for a Tahir Whitehead either.

OL or DB. Really depends on where we draft.

I REALLY wish we would have kept Bradberry over Shaq last offseason. Dude is playing fantastic.

Anyone with a brain knew that was the right move.

So what do the Panthers do?  The exact opposite.

It's almost like our GM doesn't understand basic roster construction.

Hurney is living in the past in terms of positional value. He also has a fetish for "project" players.

    • These last couple playoff/championship games for the edge class will mean millions. Someone will have a big game and become the favorite top edge. Everything is on the line for the edge group now.
    • Because he's not the best prospect in the draft, he's the best college player in the draft, and those are two entirely different things. Yes, if he focused on one side, his stats may have been better, but stats aren't what makes a player's prospects, it's their abilities and how they translate to the next level. I'm also not knocking him as a prospect, not like I'm saying he's a mid round pick, he's just probably the 2nd best CB and 3rd best WR, in what way is that throwing shade on him?  It's literally saying he's a Top 10 pick, just not THE top prospect at his position(s).  I really don't get why you think someone saying a player is the 2nd best player at one position and 2nd or 3rd best at another position is hating on them, it's crazy talk. Even in your defense of him here, you say a just asinine sentence, "he's the #1 rated prospect because he's actually elite at both positions" His ability at 2 positions has 0% bearing on his NFL prospects, as no team is going to use him full time both ways, he's either going to be a full time WR, or a mostly full time CB who gets 5 or so snaps a game on offense.   So him playing both positions shouldn't factor into any team's draft evaluation of him, if a team is taking him over Johnson because of the few snaps he'd play on offense, they're choosing a player for the wrong reason.  The only way I'm taking him over T-Mac is if it's a team that already has a true outside #1 and what they need is speed in the slot to compliment the outside guy (and btw, most teams don't have that, if anything, most would have the slot guy and need the true outside #1).
