People talk about the loss picks but the $40m to spend elsewhere is huge.

Where are you getting $40m from?

Bridgewater's total contract is 3 years 63m. His cap hit for this year is 14m, per spottrac.

More to the point, Teddy costs an average of 21m per year over that contract. Barring a starting qb on a rookie deal, which everyone is aware is the cheat code for building a winner in the current NFL if that qb plays at a high level (See: Mahomes, Patrick), this is on the low end currently for starting qb's. If you didn't pay Teddy, you would have to pay this much or more to someone else, it isn't money you can just spend elsewhere on your roster unless you want to watch a markedly worse passer chuck it around for cheaper.

I think the lost picks are the point. There isn't qb money that is fungible.

It’s ridiculous. 2019 was an IOL draft. We could have had a C in McCoy and a G (T backup) in Evans. Instead we reached for Little who looked awful at the combine drills. This year in a stud OT draft, we went DT. Don’t get me wrong, I like Brown, but because of Little (i.e. Hurney) we spent $13.5M on an injured Okung and missed out on right now having an OL of Wirfs/Becton/Wills at LT, McCoy at C, Evans and Daley at G and Moton at RT. Again, no offense to Brown, but wouldn’t that young OL be nice to have instead of Little and Brown?

Here’s the top rookies this year, notice all three top tackles we could have taken:

Teddy’s guaranteed money is $31M, so he’s probably assuming 2 years of Teddy which is $42M I think. If you don’t sign Teddy and let Grier get us Lawrence/Fields then you saved that $40M+ to rollover for a future FA along with the 3rd for Bradberry.

that makes some sense but he just threw out it there without bothering to explain where that number came from. Thanks for the breakdown.

The comp picks we could have had vs the players we signed instead? I would rather have the comp picks if it's all or nothing. I get the Teddy move and it could still payoff next year if we develop a QB behind him in 2021 but yeah all in all a lot of wasted moves and missed draft capital in a time when we need as much as we can get.

This^  I'm not sure why its so hard for people to understand.

Teddy was not signed JUST to be a bridge QB.  You don't give up that much just to keep a seat warm.

Teddy's contract was a "we think this guy has a chance to be a franchise QB, but if he isn't it doesn't cripple us forever type of contract".  Heck, if Teddy was to have played well enough this year I'm not convinced they would even draft a QB.

If Teddy plays well enough for us to not to feel the need to draft a QB than it was a great singing, and in a year or two you extend him and we have our franchise QB for the next 8 years.  If Teddy doesn't play that well and we draft a QB this offseason that ends up starting in 2021 or 2022 then looking back signing Teddy wasn't the best choice.

Would his mentorship help a young guy, of course, but not $40m worth.  The QB position is the most overcoached position on he field.  Most positions have position coaches.  The QB has input from the HC, OC, and QB coach.  Also what other position coach only had 2-3 players to coach.  This idea of a vet QB helping is overplayed.

$40m and a 3rd round pick can get easily get you 2 good guards and a center,  That will help Wilson or FIelds a lot more that Teddy's mentorship.

Maybe we draft a QB this offseason and Teddy starts next year and we make a playoff run and the following year the rookie takes over.  Maybe that playoff run is worth $40m to someone.

There is no perfect answer.  Signing Cam to a 5yr extension would have been a gamble.  Signing Teddy to a 3yr deal is a a gamble.  Not doing anything and counting on a rookie next year would be a gamble.

We all have our own ideas of what should have happened.  Personally I would have started Grier, drafted a guy in 2021, and then signed a true "bridge" QB (2-6m range) next year to start for 1 year or let Grier start for one more year.
