Unrealistic expectations

I see some are already ripping the coaches and forgetting that our problem is lack of talent on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense. We all knew these routs were coming at the start of the season so just relax and hope we can do well in the draft.

We had a good first quarter. Our second quarter was like 35 yards of offense I thought they said during the game.

That was actually the second half of the game, 35 yards. The second quarter the team got a whooping 37 yards...

So the three last quarters the team gained 72 yards.. for a game total of 187.

Yeah that reinforces my point though. We had a good first quarter on offense and that was it.

Problem is the defense looked sufficient to start the year, now they look just awful, and thats not the direction a young defense should go, they should get better as the season goes and things make more sense in front of them. After giving up a 98 yard TD to a guy who's 40 time is only measurable on the mayan calendar, No one on that defense is even close to adequate.

Who says they should get better?  There's more tape on them now what they're doing schematically and at some point it comes down to 1 on 1 matchups. When you have poor talent, especially at positions like MLB and DB, you get exposed.

Exactly.  We have some young talent on defense, largely due to last year's draft.  The DL may be on a track to become a force to be reckoned with in the not too distant future.  But the secondary and LB corps is mostly bare, save for Chinn.

Generally, offensive and defensive coordinators are pretty smart and identifying strengths and weaknesses given about a half a season of film.

yeah you could watch brady yesterday targeting whitehead and boston specifically.

The start definitely made people get hope

I tried to warn everyone that the more film we put on tape the worse we would look. We had a significant element of surprise early in the season with so much roster turnover and am all new nearly exclusively college coaching staff.

I’m pleased with the coaching. I have some problems with defensive alignments sometimes, that giant hole in the middle of the field on the 98 yard td was more coaching problem than talent deficiency, but I’m mostly fine with even Snow. The problem is bad QB, bad MLB and highly inconsistent play in the secondary outside of Chinn.

    • Qbs aren't defined by physical abilities. Brady, Brees, Manning, Montana, Warner,.....doesn't seem to correlate.

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
