Smitty

TO is obnoxious, but he's never punched out a teammate.

good point but he atleast apologizes for his actions..T.O. never cared about his team, never consoled a teammate and if he punched a teammate would never play a down in the nfl again because he would never have thought it was a mistake

People make alot of excuses for the guy, excuses they don't make for other players, but in all honesty the guy just isn't making the same plays he used to make. Given our passing woes I don't expect the same production, but there are plenty of mistakes and missed opportunities that are nobodies fault but his own.

He's not a horrible WR or worthless, but I have a very high standard for the level of play I expect from him and he's not even coming close to living up to that. He depends heavily on his speed and leaping ability and he's at the age where that starts to deteriorate. Realistically, he probably has a couple good years left in him and take a look where our franchise is.

If we get a new QB, HC and possibly OC, there are going to be some growing pains. As deep as this upcoming QB class is, there aren't many players that look like day 1 starters. You have a year, possibly two, before any QB you get is going to be any good, especially if we don't trade to get back into the 1st. By then, Smitty may be completely done as a NFL WR or close to it.

In the best interest of the franchise, if you can get good trade value for him, take it. Get a franchise QB and WR in the draft. *cough* Jordan Shipley *cough* A couple more young mid-level WRs from FA (Lance Moore, Steve Breaston, Domenik Hixon, ect). I'd love to get Vincent Jackson or Brandon Marshall but they'd break the bank and we need more than 1 guy. Let's not turn into the Redskins.

The biggest problem is that you probably won't find a team to give you good value (1st rounder + more) for Smitty given the year he's having, a quality upcoming draft, and a deep WR FA market. Oh well, that's just my amateur take on the situation.

You Smitty fans take the cake. He's not the best player on this team, hasn't been for a couple of years. Right now this is Double Trouble's team. Smitty knows that and his gigantic ego can't stand it. "I deserve a better team because this one isn't centered around me". Trade his ass. You'd be amazed what it does for the locker room.

As G5 said, how's the TO removal working for the Cowboys? Can any of you Smitty guys answer that one?

You sir, are a complete moron. There is no indication whatsoever that Smitty "can't stand it" that Double Trouble is becoming the focus of the offense. How would you explain his comment to Williams and Stewart last year?

"I'm not as good as y'all. Two heads are better than one. But I'll ride your coattails all the way."

That definitely sounds like someone pissed that others are succeeding.

Smith is not a problem in the locker room. He is the first guy on the sideline to console someone when they mess up (Moore against Buffalo, Williams yesterday), and he is constantly mentoring the younger players. His passion has sparked this team for years. Please cease typing words.

I feel like Steve Smith wasn't the focal point of last year's offense, and he was still involved in the game planning. We found ways to get him the ball, all while being a primary running team. This year we have to completely rely on the running backs because of Jake Delhomme. This is not Smith's fault. He is angry because he is not utilized, and we are losing. We went 12-4 last year and Smith had a big year. The only times we've made the playoffs are when Smitty has good years.

Owens had at least 1000 yards and at least 10 TDs in every season w/ Dallas. Nobody on there roster has the talent to do that 3 consecutive years. Cowboys also had 3 consecutive winning seasons with Owens.....

looks like they got rid of a mouth and lost consistant production at the WR spot.....probably came out no better or worse overall.

If you could get a Davone Bess AND a Vincent Jackson to replace a Steve Smith...would you?

People are being too closed minded about this. What would it take to replace him and revitalize the WR corps so that THAT aspect of the game isn't so predictable.

That's what this thread is really about.

Idiots that claim this is a stupid/retarded/dumb thread are just too thickskulled to really understand what's being discussed. Everyone likes Smitty's game. He's a player. Does he have some negative aspects surrounding him? You betcha.

But from a franchise management perspective...do you plan to keep him around until he decides to retire? Or get some value out of him prior? Fans need to decide where they want this franchise to go. I'm not saying keeping him on kills the franchise either...there are a whole lot of other areas that need addressing as well. Operating on a buy low/sell high model...what do you think should be done?

I remember Jon Beason as well as a few other players that specifically thought coming to Carolina would be great because they could play with a guy like Steve Smith. He is becoming a veteran of the team and even takes players like Kenneth Moore under his wing to help the team. Getting rid of a player that has single handedly won several games for us in the past and still has something left in the tank is pretty stupid considering how this season has gone.

Smitty never blew up at Dan Henning, but then again he actually knew how to get him the ball. The combination of Jeff Davidson, John Fox, and Jake Delhomme have effectively taken away Smitty's play making ability. We are handcuffed on offense and until we take them off we will never know how productive he can still be (or any other WR on the team).

Smith is on the decline about as much as Moss was on the decline in Oakland. If we can get a Kevin Walter or some other legit #2, a new QB and a coach with a clue Smith will be right back to an elite WR. Hell we probably just need a new QB, the coach and WR would just be icing on the cake. I'm to the point that I think next offseason we should look to sign Vick if there are no other legit options at QB. Putting Vick, Smith, DWill and Stewart on the field would give us possibly four of the 30 most talented offensive players in the league on one team, a coach with a clue would be able to muster at least 21+ PPG out of that. Of course I would prefer a real QB but I don't know if a guy like that will be available in FA or int he 2nd round.
