Smitty

Jake throws a tentrum tantrum every time he throws a pick...he acts like a 3 year old sometimes and it's honestly f'n embarassing as a fan of his team...

Smitty has some what of a right to be angry, JAKE IS TERRIBLE and can't get him the ball...he's gotta be frustrated as anyone out there...and maybe if HE freaks out enough the team will "listen to him" and go get a damn QB...they would MUCH rather part ways with Jake than #89...

Listening to the way guys on the team talk, and knowing what Meat knows, I seriously doubt that.

They're worlds apart in playing ability, but also worlds apart in likability. To us as fans, that may not mean much. To guys that have to work with them every day, that's another story.

Mind you, I'm not saying "keep Jake, dump Smith". But I think if the choice were left up to the guys who have to work with them, and they had to lose one or the other, I think there's a good chance Smith would be the one getting the short straw.

It's a similar deal with old special teams coach Scott O'Brien. Fans pine for his return, but people that had to work with him are glad he's gone.

- Smith isn't the receiver he has been. Maybe it's age, maybe it's choice, but the Smith I see now isn't the same guy I saw in years past. And no, it isn't solely Jake Delhomme's fault. Smith himself bears part of the blame too.

- If Smith does go elsewhere next season, and he proceeds to say "the Panthers suck" and/or starts dishing up secrets, a whole lot of Panther fans will turn on him. Every incident in his past will be discussed ad nauseum and some will claim they always (secretly) hated him.

- Likewise, if Smith is traded and a new receiver comes in and starts lighting it up, you'll see a lot of "Steve Who?" on this board and elsewhere. Might seem unthinkable right now, but fans are as fickle as the wind.

You'll never hear the words out of my mouth. If he leaves I'll remember the guy I saw work his ass off to gain yards and move the chains during his prime. I'll remember watching him leap over double coverage to haul in critical passes, or throwing up on the sideline after taking a bad hit only to line up on the next drive as if nothing happened, or playing with the flu or food poisoning. He gave this team everything he possibly could.

- Meat's history gives him huge credibility on this matter. He has more direct knowledge about Smith than anyone on this board. In the past, he and I have disagreed on the matter, but I'm beginning to see signs he may have been right.

okay maybe that's true, but at the same time we have to put things in perspective that, honestly, the passing game is really really really fuged up. It's out of sync, we're still trying to find ways of getting yards through the air halfway into the season, and no matter how good a WR is, if the QB play is terrible, they're simply not going to produce well.

In fairness, Terrell Owens busted his butt and risked permanent injury working back to the point that he could play in the Super Bowl with the Eagles too. I really don't think Eagle fans take that into consideration when they think of him though.

Has Smith contributed a lot to this team? Yes.

Has he done some things that are worthy of scorn? Sadly, also yes.

Will some fans still take Smith's side if he goes elsewhere? Yes.

Will some fans kick Smith to the curb and treat him like they never cared for him? Again, also yes.

Fox was pretty pissed about last year's knuckle sandwich to Lucas. With that in mind, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Smith suspended for this incident. And honestly, if I were in Fox's position, I'd probably do it too.

As a head coach, you just can't let a player, any player, get away with that kind of thing.

And yeah, if Delhomme did it, he should sit too.

(but I think that anyway, for other reasons)

There is a huge difference between the quarterback yelling "Come on, get the ****ing play to me" and a wide receiver yelling "Don't call that ****ing play again" or throwing the ball toward his own sideline.

Let me make something clear (God, I'm Obama now)....I don't think Smitty should be gone for stuff he does off the field. If that were the case he should have been gone long ago. I'm talking the insubordination he has shown recently. If you keep Smitty, then fire your coaches for putting up with that crap. Because there's no way the other players will respect a coach who lets him get away with that. There's already the perception in that locker room that Peppers and Smith do what they want.

Not sure I get why you include Peppers in that.....

You and I both know Fox will give the Smitty situation an "it is what it is" and try to win next week. "Just game day adrenaline blah, blah, blah."

Peppers can do whatever he wants, they had to Franchise him and pay him ridiculous money just to stay. The FT tag only works for an organization if the players last contract was reasonable, such as it was the year before when we used it on Gross. Pep is in the drivers seat and he knows it. But that's more on Hurney.

The team has been pampering and catering to Jake too. Far more than those 2 guys, and difference is, Smith & Peppers make plays. Look, I understand what entertains us, is your job. I understand you see things we dont and probably have a different perspective. Im just telling you as an NFL fan I DONT GIVE A f**k. I dont work around Steve Smith, I dont know the man and dont have to, so I dont care about that stuff. All I know is on Sunday the guy makes plays and is a leader for us on the football field. If he's out there getting chippy wit the coaches in a tough division game, I LOVE THAT! This team is as bland as a hamburger, and #89 is the A1 that gives us that flavor. #89 isnt the problem, the problem is our "you dont need an elite QB" philosophy has caught up to us in an ever changing league.

This would be more credible if you didnt pimp out Foster like he was the greatest thing since slice bread. "More rushing yards than any rb in Panther history blah blah blah." :smilielol5: Smith is a good player, but his quickness, speed is not where it use be. D-Will and Beason are the faces and hearts of the franchise now.

but Pep has always been a good teammate and player for the coaches....he isn't going to aid in or create problems once a season starts.

Pep didn't bring any garbage into the 08 season. Tried to get out in the offseason......couldn't. Now, he is back to work doing what he always has done. Being upset Hurney paid him that money imo isn't a good enough reason to lump Pep into a group that does whatever they want and gets away with it. Smitty yes, Pep no.

Only to a hermit such as yourself who never travels outside of Meck County. Me defending Foster while he was here is not worse than you sticking up for a lameduck coach like Fox or a joke of a QB like Jake. You have 0 cred around here buddy. I swear man the mentality around here is so damn small time. Steve Smith without question is the most recognizable and liked player on this team NATIONALLY. Ive met NFL fans all over this country who the only player they know on our roster is Steve Smith. And of course Jake Delhomme because of his poor play. D Will nor Beason are not the draw that 89 is or was. They may be big around here, but nationally, UNH UNH. If you Panther employees and undercover Smith-haters think dumping Steve Smith is gonna leave a good lasting impression on Jerry Richardson's legacy you're sadly mistaken. The Panthers FO reputation is about as low as its ever been, keep making dumbass decisions and see how far it goes. This franchise is on the cusp of destruction.

He is the most recognizable player yes... but I think you go to far when you say we're on the "cusp of destruction"

There's comes a time when you let loose your veteran players. The teams that know when to do that are good ones. It's time for Steve Smith to go. His best days are behind him and he's no longer worth the trouble he causes, as he's just a good WR now. He's not a super star.
