Is there a huge difference between the fifth best DT in the league and the fifteenth?

Is there a stat for how many times a defensive lineman affected a play by altering a running lane or forcing a quarterback to move around?

There are only two classes player in the league: guys that are good enough to help your team win and guys that are not. Stats don't always help you identify those guys, especially not at positions like offensive or defensive line.

You actually make a good point.  If there isn't much a difference between the 5th and 15th then you don't have to spend a top 10 pick on one.

You are correct that people need to realize there is a difference between the two DTs.  1-Techs line up between the center and guard and therefore are a natural double team.  The 3-tech lines up on the outside shoulder of the guard so he is harder to double team him because the OT has to block the end.

The 1-tech isn't getting doubled teamed because the other team fears him, its because of where he is aligned.  That would happen regardless of who is playing there. Think about it this way, you draft a slightly below average DT he gets double teamed and doesn't get to the QB.  You draft a slightly above average DT and he gets double teamed and doesn't get to the QB.  Same thing happens. This is why there isn't much difference between the 5th and 15th like you said.

Getting doubled in itself doesn't justify a top-10 pick.  You can put a lot of guys out there who would get doubled just as much.

Being able to alter a running lane or forcing the QB to move, like you said, while be doubled is what the really great DTs can do, and those are the ones worth a top 10 pick, and yes there are stats out there for that.

I think your coming to the wrong conclusion. Yes thats all well and true, if the guy is going to get double teamed anyway and not make much of a impact on the passing game (in a passing league) is that worth the 7th pick? A one dimensional player or 2 down player isn't what should justify a top 7 pick. Those guys are found second 3rd round. And while he was the best available defensive tackle it was a down year for defensive tackles.

He isn't a bad player at all and will be one of those around for a long time players because he is a good football player. I think he can dominate one on one matchups but because of his technique alignment like you said how often will that happen? Kinlaw got his first sack last week by comparison but its there. It even brings up the question how big was the gap between brown and kinlaw?

The sacks will come. You don't get as many pressures as he's getting without the sacks eventually coming. Honestly he's ahead of where I expected him to be as a pass rusher at this point.

How many pressures does he really have compared to other DTs?  I saw the list comparing to him rookies, but what about the rest of the league?

Exactly!! You draft a guy top 10 hes number 1 at his possion. If your number one that year at your position i dont want to hear about how you compare to guys your suppose to be better than, your drafted to be a potential yearly pro bowler. A better measuring stick would be your true competition not oh hes better than the guys he was suppose to be better than.
