Transcendent talent signs major extension and then is injury plagued for the rest of his career?

Yep, that sounds like the panther way.

No that’s the running back way. Which is why some of us were screaming not to sign him. This is gonna be the norm for the rest of his contract.

Lol what are ya'll talking about

This is McCaffrey's first season missing time.  Relax.  Way too early to act like he's about to start breaking down.  Any player at any position can hurt their shoulder or sprain their ankle.

Look at the elite RBs all-time.

They don't just fall off at 24 years old.  Are there some examples, yes, but it mostly happens to the guys who were merely good.  A HOF-level back, which McCaffrey is, has a lot of years left.

This idea that because he's had a couple of injuries this year, that suddenly it will become the norm for him, is ridiculous.  Ish happens.  Faulk was hurt throughout 1996 and had a HORRIBLE year and guess what?  He still had his best years in front of him.  It is way more likely that the same is true for McCaffrey than it is he just falls off a cliff.

Stop reacting to the media narrative.  McCaffrey will most likely be fine.  An ankle sprain can happen to anyone.  And this shoulder injury, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't even sound that serious.  Which is why it is phrased as his Week 10 being in doubt, not his season.

I agree that the RB position is not worth a huge second contract, but CMC is a multi-dimensional player who can actually shift to more of a Westbrook type back--but a better receiver that Westbrook.  We are looking at a 9-10 year career, if you consider how elusive he is--and if he continues to split time with a decent backup.

So a player who touches the ball about 40% and averages about 6 yards per touch is worth what he is being paid.  Not only does he make the offense click in the run game and passing game, he is just as good as a receiver as he is RB--making matchups very tough.

For example, we just lost to the super bowl champions by 2 points in their house.   Take CMC out of the equation, and what do you think the score would have been?

The thing is, context is VERY important.

It isn't the RB position itself that isn't worth a huge second contract.  It is that most RBs aren't worth huge second contracts.  There is a huge difference.

LIS, look at the Hall of Fame backs of the game.  Those guys have 8 to 10 year careers.  Even someone like LeSean McCoy had 8 really good years, and that isn't including his rookie season where he was definitely underutilized in Reid's offense.

McCaffrey proved himself as one of those elite guys, someone capable of making the Hall of Fame.  He's got that kind of skill-set and athleticism.  He was worth a second contract.

People need to stop viewing McCaffrey in the same light as say, DeMarco Murray.  Murray was a good runner, maybe even great, but he wasn't elite.  And even then, Murray had a history of injuries before that contract and was already 26 years old.

McCaffrey is a way better overall player, has almost no injury history until this season, and is only 24 years old. Could he prove to not be worth the deal?  Sure, but that is true for any player, ever.  But there is no reason right now to think that we should be regretting that deal.  One, it ain't like we won't have money to pay anyone else on the team in the foreseeable future.  Two, McCaffrey just isn't like most RBs.  His game translates over a long period of time.  He'll be fine.  We'll be fine.  Let's not overreact to a couple of injuries that could happen to anyone.

Obviously McCaffrey isn't the FREAK that Peterson was, but look at Peterson.  At 34 years old last year, despite countless injuries, he was still running well.  And he isn't even 1/2 the receiver that McCaffrey is.

NFL went through a dry period for RBs for a little bit and it just turned into this huge narrative, especially online, that RBs aren't worth it.  And it is just hogwash.  Yes, a lot of RBs aren't worth it, but the elite ones absolutely are.  There is a reason why teams generally try to keep them, like the Saints and Kamara.
