QB Talk: Zach Wilson & Kyle Trask

Now that we're well into the season, these 2 do not appear to be aberrations and are rising in scouting land.

And we can put Trevor Lawrence aside.  He's a New York Jet.  That's clearly happening.  I also cannot see the Jags winning many more games so we're in thin shot of Fields.

Now, I get it, people remain a tad hesitant with Trask given the talent at Florida but Wilson is getting majorly hyped right now and for good reason. So, I see a minimum 4 QB first round situation unfolding at the current rate.

I mean, people are enamored with Lance with such less talent he's playing against, and honestly, it's an inconsistent resume.  Trask and Wilson have the size, have good arms, and are simply not slowing down right now.  I mean, these kids look for real from what I'm seeing and two very different styles in comparison to one another.

Are either/both of these guys legit?  Worthy of pick, let's say, 5-12?  Is it one of these guys that's really our next QB to roll the dice with?

We've often seen how it can be the other first round QBs, not the top guy, getting put into better teams, situations and then they excel.  I.E. Lamar, Big Ben, Rodgers, Mahomes, Wilson, etc.  Then on the flipside, Goff, Mitch-T, Wentz, Mayfield, etc. aren't much to get excited about and those teams continue to sputter much more than experience success.  I admit, there are exceptions on both ends.

Bottom line: We can still get a franchise QB and we may not be in better position moving forward than this one.  We're trending up and I find it hard to see us regressing in 2021 for a 2022 QB, so why not go for one when we're in position to and love what we see? That's what teams like the Chiefs & Ravens did when the talent presented itself.

I say, if we interview, scout one of these guys and fall for them, we should without a doubt roll the dice.  We can still build lines out, but when that QB presents itself, you shoot for the moon.

So, opening this up--What's the Huddle's opinion on these guys?  Pretty incredible seasons so far.  And I'm not intending to discard Teddy, but let's keep him out of this convo.  Danke.

Wilson needs to check out medically. He's had surgery on both the shoulder and thumb on his throwing arm. Those are as big as injury red flags get for a QB.

I don't find the thumb concerning.  He's a year removed from the shoulder surgery  and looks great.  It would be one thing if there was regression or major mechanics changes, but he seems to have gotten it fixed at an appropriate time.  If he's clean throughout the season and pulls together a great run for BYU, he's going to be coveted IMHO.

Don't sleep on Kellen Mond. I need to watch some more of him, but I think he could be a big time prospect.

I've liked Mond at times but he has a really really long way to go as a QB.  Along with Jaime Newman.

Mond has these flash in the pan moments and then looks super pedestrian for a few weeks.  Very up and down and pretty poor pocket presence.

A lot people in analytics community are not high on Trask at all, they see him as a good college QB with limitations, he’s also a stiff, in today’s nfl it’s hard to compete with no mobility.

I haven’t seen much of Wilson, but he has a cannon for an arm, he leads all cfb in passes over 40 yards

I hear you with Trask and the supporting cast (that OL and TE woah nelly).  Kind of why I'm gauging the opinions.  His season is insane but the lack of mobility just doesn't jive in today's NFL.

This Wilson though, I mean, he looks really good right now.

What I've seen of both guys is limited to a few highlight reels.

Admittedly, Florida quarterbacks make me nervous. Still, you can't be a slave to that kind of thing.

What I've seen of Wilson reminded me a little bit of Jake Delhomme. He was definitely willing to gamble on some of the passes I saw.

I think of Florida QB's the same as USC receivers, no, just no.

Florida State pass rushers tend to flop in the NFL too.

I take that sort of thing seriously because there's usually a logical reason (systems being the most common) but there are definitely exceptions.

Wilson honestly seems somewhere in between a Tannehill & Russell Wilson.  He's got the mobile improvisation and intangibles of Russell, but he has a really pretty deeper ball like Tannehill (less rainbows than RW).

I think that's one of the videos I watched.

I put out a post asking people for suggestions of quarterbacks other than the big three that we might draft. Wilson and Trask's names both came up a couple of times.
