Prior to the last few weeks, Matt Rhule had seemed generally upbeat in press conferences and on the sidelines.

More recently though, he's been visibly livid during games and last night at his presser he looked like a man who was being brought before the Inquisition.

Pro football is tough, and I think Rhule might be starting to understand just how tough.

To be clear, the expectations of him now are infinitely greater than they were at Temple or Baylor. At those spots, Rhule was beloved just for being a guy who could overachieve with lesser programs even though he didn't win championships.

In the NFL, not so much. If you don't win championships here, nobody pats you on the back for being an overachiever.

So will he rise to the challenge?

No idea. I certainly hope so because he's a very likable guy. But make no mistake, he's on a different (literal) playing field than he  was before. Being better than anybody thought you'd be is good for year one, but by year three people are going to be expecting results.

There are a couple of things I do think he'll need to adjust. His prior statement that he doesn't believe in firing assistants definitely won't fly at the pro level. He's also going to have to adjust to the turnover being quicker than in the college game, among other things.

You're not in Kansas anymore, Toto... or at Temple... or Baylor... or even Western Carolina.

This is the big time, and for all our sakes I really hope you're successful here.

Trying to "win" with less in the NFL, against NFL coaches and NFL talent is hard enough without real NFL talent. He's going to be miserable until somebody at Mint Street wakes the heck up.

If you're going to tank for a season, do so, get somebody to put butts in seats and fill that stadium. Scrappy no names won't do it. You're not going to outsmart the NFL, you hit them in the mouth and take your records and your respect.

That goes back to my one big worry about Matt Rhule though.

If it turns out that somebody be hired is not the best man for the job, will he stick to his guns about not firing assistants?

Lord, I hope not. That would give me Ron Rivera flashbacks.

Yes me as well. I hope he is much more flexible than Rivera.

During the game Thursday I was infuriated watching five guys stand still in the defensive backfield while a single receiver moves around freely and snags the ball over and over for easy catches.  We didn't play an effective matchup zone which any DB should know how to play.  It didn't look like a personnel thing it was a system thing. If you aren't going to.play man you at least have to play man within your designated zone and attack whoever comes in there.  Then I remembered that Burris and Douglas were not playing and I understand why we were so vanilla. Still,  I thought that Snow was bringing in an aggressive defense and what we have is a passive death by a thousand cuts defense which limits the time the offense can be out there.  Sure a lack of third down conversions helped as well but we lost the time of possession battle by 13 minutes.  Maybe I heard and read it wrong but this defense is vanilla and too basic to be effective.  Maybe this is the process and we will improve over time but the last few games have been tough to watch on defense.
