Rhule's transition

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Does anyone actually think he’s underperformed since coming here? He could not win another game all season and be right where many projected us to be at for yearly total wins. Rhule is going to be fine, this still a team with many holes on defense and O line. Not only did this team have the highest turnover year over year, but we have the most in dead cap, and no offseason at all. He is exceeding expectations.

I think the only game we've lost by double digits is the Bucs game.  I'd say that's impressive, along with the 3 wins.

If he's getting pissed, then the players will notice that we play to win the game.  It shows what's expected, and they'll know where they stand as far as their future.

Now Arians mentioned "some of that college stuff" and then the comment mentioned above about high school zone coverage, fair enough.

But I loved last night's fake punt that Chinn took for a first down.  And I like the willingness to go for it on 4th that we've done several times this year, twice last night that didn't work.  Convert just one of those last night and we may have had a different ball game.

I ain't worried right now, but I understand your concerns.  But if you're going to give a draft pick 3 to 4 years to learn and adjust, I think you have to give this coaching staff the same opportunity.  I think right now they're doing what they're comfortable with to give us a chance to win games.  They'll know what isn't working and why in their 3rd year.  I think they'll adjust.  Not gonna worry about that this season.

Exactly...most folks thought we would be getting throttled and run off the field every game. The staff has definitely over achieved considering the lack of talent on the OL and defense...and a serious injury to our best player. The Panthers have been in every game. If we finish close to .500 it will be a major accomplishment with this roster.

If you're reading this as me expressing a concern, you're misunderstanding. It's more just a commentary about what Rhule is going through now.

The one thing that I would say that is "concernish" is that I've seen good early returns on other coaches that didn't end up panning out after other teams had a chance to catch up to them. And yes, that could happen to Rhule.

The hope is that he keeps adapting himself so that he stays ahead of the game. Very few coaches do that well, but the ones that do are elite.

I like what Rhule has done with the talent we have.  All those rookies playing on defense will pay dividends next year.

That said if Hurney keeps F_cking up with poor FA picks and putting us in Cap hell it's not going to help Rhule.  50m in Cap Hell is unacceptable and as long as he's here the Sh_t going to continue.

Tepper has to make the change at GM.  HE HAS TO.

I think the biggest and hardest thing a coach has to do is hire and retain good people around him. If he does find success he's going to have to contend with the rest of the league trying to hire up under him. Bill and Robert Kraft have been masters at that. So have the Steelers organization. To truly have a winning culture it's a must.

That goes back to my one big worry about Matt Rhule though.

If it turns out that somebody be hired is not the best man for the job, will he stick to his guns about not firing assistants?

Lord, I hope not. That would give me Ron Rivera flashbacks.

The dead cap move was intentional. This was the year to do It. We didn’t have to, but we chose to release all those players and eat the cap.

Disagree. He had a much shorter leash and was much less acomplished in college. More pressure to produce RIGHT now.

He has already proven himself and has signed a nice long term deal with a dude who will likely model himself like Pitt.

Rhule has zero expectations this year other than to try to win 4-6 games and be competitive, which he looks like he will do.

I am pretty sure Tepper will put pressure on Rhule to upgrade. Tepper doesn't look like a man that will allow obvious shittiness, esp from coordinators.

    • LMAO, WRs are geting 30 to 40M a year, thats what matters. You have to draft an WR1, you can't get one in Free agency, and if you want to trade for one its going to cost you a first rounder AND 30-40M a year anyways. Thats why Tet is on the board at 8. The rest of what you're talking about is 100% irrelevant to the reason you draft Tet at 8.
