how is it more than a 1st

like that makes no sense

He's a top 3 pick 20 games into his career who has played up to expectations and still has a ton of developing to do and an insanely high ceiling. To the Jets he's worth a top 5 pick alone, or if it's our pick which will likely be 10-20ish, a 1st + more. Anything less and there is no reason at all for the Jets to trade him. He isn't forcing his way out like Jamal Adams (who still got them 2 1st round picks in a trade, with just 1 year left on his rookie deal).

yeah but first round picks are like luxury cars. the second they're off the lot they lost 20% of their value

the jamal adams trade was kinda an outlier, and nothing from bill obrien counts

before that the only comparable thing i can think of is like trent richardson, and that's because the colts owner was on a ketamine binge

1st rounders who perform very very rarely get traded; and when they do they get big returns. Of course those who underperform lose a ton of value, like Rosen, etc. but non-bust 1st rounders don't lose that value.

And FWIW, if you go by draft pick trade value chart, even if you say that Williams has lost 20% of his value; all that would do is drop him from 3rd overall pick value to 4th overall pick value... 3 and a half years of a top 5 talent on his rookie deal is still worth a top 5-10 pick. Why would the Jets trade that away for any less? It just makes no sense whatsoever.

i mean also im thinking of years of team control

maybe he's worth a first rounder, but that's a first rounder for 3 years vs a first rounder for 5

considering all hurney does is draft studs in the first round....if he's really fetching a first then the panthers need to pass

I agree Panthers should pass and I don't think most teams, especially those in the top 10-15 picks should even consider giving up a 1st round pick for him, but look at it from the Jets' perspective. They took the guy 3rd overall in 2019 and he showed a ton of potential his rookie year and didn't disappoint, and so far this year he's been borderline dominant despite the trash players around him. Under team control for 3.5 more years (yes the rest of this season factors in) and is already a known entity who still has even more potential. Why would they trade him for another 1st round pick which could easily wind up being a player who isn't half as good? There's no reason for them to trade him for anything less than essentially equal value of a top 5 pick. It'd be one thing if a new regime came in and didn't want him and wanted to draft their own guy, but it's still the same regime right now.
