Gross or Peppers?

Realistically, we can only keep one.

Gross is a totally unrestricted free-agent, and with his pro-bowl status this year, he's going to be expensive to keep. Peppers on the other hand, will be come one of (if not THE) highest paid DE's in the league with either a contract extension or the 20% increase in salary that comes with a franchise tag.

There is no way we can spend upwards of 20-30% of our salary cap on two players and still have room for growth and holding power on already great players. This is especially important now because of the contract extensions of both Gamble (corners are now a valuable commodity) and Kasay, and with DeAngelo and many others coming up in a few years.

FOCUS: Who would you rather keep? Gross to keep our kickass offensive line intact and maintain the run game? Or do you try and hang on to Peppers who has put up his best numbers in a contract year and try to improve on a failing defense these past weeks?

(Apologies if this has already been posted! I've been lurking here for a while and nothing like this has really popped up)

I think we can keep both, we should be able to restructure some other contracts and make room for both. If we HAD to get rid of one I would say Gross, our D-line would be absolute poo without Peppers. We have some depth and can move some people around to compensate for Gross. I am hoping we can pick up another tackle in FA or the draft and move Otah to LT.

i don't like the idea of moving otah to LT at all...something tells me to leave him over at RT where we can use his run blocking skills better. LT's like gross is hard to replace

BUT, losing peppers would be more disastrous to the d-line than gross for the o-line. pep is pretty much our line for the time being. we wouldn't have a pass rush. at least we can still run w/ gross' loss, but we will take a SIGNIFICANT hit in pass protection. we will have to keep a TE or back in the backfield to help out which will take away options

regardless, we lose. we need both players

Wharton, Hangman, Kalil, Vincent, Otah could be a possibility

Gross is gonna be VERY expensive cuz of his Pro Bowl start.

Peppers was going to be expensive regardless and he's had a great bounceback year where he's become a confident team leader.

If i had to choose, we Keep Peppers. We can't touch Gross until the offseason anyway cuz of his Franchise Tag. Luckily we don't have a 1st rounder to worry about next year, so we won't lose a lot signing expensive rookies.

Accounting for some offseason cuts... + restructuring some other contracts, we could.. POSSIBLY keep both.

We can afford both. Just have to restructure. Lucas is getting old I say we let him test the waters when his contract is up. As for Marshall...he was great in spot duty last season. I don't know what happened to the kid. Then again, Gamble has had an off season. I say we pick up a CB with our draft pick...if there's a top rated one available that is.

    • Honestly Bryce is a conundrum right now I'm not really sure what we should do with him but I am content on him being the quarterback number one going into next season. I think we should allow him the chance to play out the season to prove that he's the quarterback he can be going into next season.  I would not waste a high draft pick on a quarterback because I'm not sure anyone in this up and coming class is as good or has the ceiling that he had with that said I wouldn't throw away the future I would bring in someone like Justin Fields to have him looking over his shoulder and give us a plan b if everything doesn't go right on a one-year deal. I think the priority right now if tepper wants to make a big splash is find a way to get Travis Hunter that would be option 1AA because he helps with both sides of the field either way whatever you need defense or offense. Make that happen and then go mostly defense the rest of the way and we're cooking.
    • Move on from what?   Let me guess we gatekeeping on who we can and can't appreciate?   Next time I will just make a Kuechly appreciation thread lmao
