Curtis Samuel's favorite play

He has the highest catch rate of our receivers by a significant amount. Why are you concerned about his hands?

Because this (which is FANTASTIC):

Doesn't erase this (which is BAD):

He's our player.  I want him to succeed.  Just like any Panthers player.  I want our guys to be their best.  But I have three years of history to look at that says his hands are suspect, and six games can't just make the previous 38 games go away.  He body caught so many balls the previous three years, it's just terrifying.

That said, the catch he made on the high pass against the Raiders was excellent.  But in the same game, he subsequently dropped a ball because he tried to body catch it.  Overall, he's been great this year.  Long may it continue.

If his catch rate remains where it is through the whole season, we would be SILLY not to resign him.  If he becomes our Amendola / Welker / Hines Ward / etc . . . that's huge for us.  I'm a little worried someone else will overpay him if I'm honest, especially if this trend continues.

Still, I love his attitude.  It's exactly what we need.

Samuel doesn't have hands problem.   He has (HAD) a route problem.   He is still largely a RB/WR hybrid.  And when he runs routes within that scope.....his hands are fine.

When you throw him on the outside and ask him to be the type player he never had been? Well, he doesn't do a great job.  It's like throwing CMC on the outside and having him play WR on the outside all game.   He wouldn't be the badass pass catcher he is out there.  He doesn't do those routes well.

If he continues his play this season, I can definitely see another team offering him $10M/year and us not matching it because we are already paying Robby $10M and DJ is gonna cost us $15M+ when it comes time to pay him.

you can get him cheaper than that.    More comparable players IMO would like the Cole Beasley type WRs.

Allow me to gently remind you of the career stats which earned FunFun $10 million.  Bear in mind Samuel is on course for over 800 yards this year.

Beasley was 29 when he signed his $7M contract in 2019. Samuel will be 25 in the offseason. That matters. If he gets 700-800 yards and continues to be a monster on 3rd down he can get $10M.

I’d be thrilled if we can get him for $7M on a 3 or 4 year deal but I just don’t think it happens.

If he continues his play he will have 528 yards and 2 to 3 rushing tds. Is that worth 10 million?

No, but that doesn’t mean someone won’t see that production and versatility out of a WR3 and think they can scale it up to WR1/2 production.

at the current level of production, Curtis projects out to a 616 yard season with 0 receiving TDs.

age aside, Samuel plays the same game really.  More athletic than Beasley but the occupies the same function in an offense.    And also doesn't offer the upside of being an actual vertical field stretcher or redzone target.

I just don't see 10M on the table.   A team can simply go draft a slot WR.   They are the easiest to find IMO.

Carolina should go ahead and just put a reasonable deal on the table and try to get him.   Especially if we think Teddy/Brady are here at least a couple seasons.
