The Saints offense has significantly more talent than our defense has.

With their starters, yes. I'm not sure that was the case today. Granted the offensive line was moving our d-line around pretty easy, but I think we should've held our own again against their receivers today.

Receivers or no receivers, the truth is that Brees is just that damn good, especially running Payton's offense.

Used to be the key to slowing Brees down was to block his sight lines and exploit his lack of height (Rivera won us a game or two using that tactic). Unfortunately, the Saints were smart and built an offensive line that makes that particular approach damn near impossible anymore.

we are missing many players on defense...coach is filling holes best he can

we have maybe half our players on def that are 2nd tier players

Yes the consensus is that our players aren't good and most of you won't say they're good unless they have known names. They can play, I just think the way they're being coached to play should be a little different. it's like we're playing band-aid defense: we're allowing ourselves to get cut, we accept bleeding coming through and around the band-aid but tighten it up to prevent it from gushing out.

Judging any DC on this defensive roster is idiotic.  I've been pleasantly surprised with our defense, I fully expected them to be bottom 10 bad.

When the rookie DT allows a huge run game because of poor gap discipline that isn't on the scheme, that is on the player.  When the rookie CB misses an open field tackle that allows a 1st down that isn't on the scheme, that is on the player.

"When the rookie DT allows a huge run game because of poor gap discipline" that's on coaching!

The Defense doesn't seem to have a goal of making stops... The goal seems to be allowing a death by a thousand cuts and hoping for a turnover here and there.

So the same bend don’t break type defense we’ve had since John Fox?

That’s basically what Rivera did... play soft coverage, keep everything in front of you and make them drive the entire field with no mistakes. I really don’t think we have the personnel to play man right now.

the announcers mentioned we were playing a lot more zone today with douglas out

When the Saints trot out a roster of nobody WRs, knowing Brees can't throw a football more than 20 yards, the Carolina Panthers countered with a zone defense. WTF. Accordingly, yet another rookie, undrafted WR on the opposing team's roster has a career day. Brees throws for 8 yards at a time and an 81% completion percentage because of a zone defense that Brees just threw to guys standing in the openings in that zone.

As the announcer correctly stated yesterday, "The Saints have the Panthers right where they want them- 3rd down and 8 for Brees." How many times you gonna have that scenario and get beat every fugging possession. The fugging Saints didn't punt the ball once yesterday.

I don't give a poo how bad you think your defense is, at some point you gotta grow a pair.

We don't have big name players on defense but they should be coached to not miss tackles and to play their assignments. On passing downs our linebackers are dropping to shallow, allowing throws over their head. And what gripes my glutes more than anything else is when the pass is thrown to a receiver with multiple Panther defenders around him and no one breaks on the ball, but they all converge 2 sec after the catch.

Thank you. Shows less than zero faith in your guys and declares to the world that this isn't a NFL worthy secondary. There isn't an offense in the league that won't walk all over us if we're scared to man up against the Saints backups.

You need a lot of good coverage players to be any kind of aggressive without getting burned now. The defense has very few of them--even the promising talents like Chinn aren't good enough to put on an island yet. I've liked the amount of investment in that area so far, though. It'll get better with time.

Better tell that to the six teams we've played. We're currently 13th (a.k.a. slightly better than average) in both yardage and points allowed per game.

Considering the expectations of the D coming into the season, they've been playing way over their heads.
