REPORT: Industry sources are watching the Panthers for potential GM opening

I think even if Rhule is the actual decision maker, we should and will have another guy as a GM. BOB on his own is the perfect example of getting stuck in your own echo chamber. You need people to bounce ideas off of and bring new ideas to the table, even if you don’t ultimately follow them every time.

Agree completely. Rhule and Co won’t be privy to kids in college in a couple years like they are now. We absolutely had a great advantage this draft since many of the visits and pro days got canceled and we had coaches who knew tons of players from opposing teams, their teams, players recruited that went elsewhere and other coaching acquaintances. We won’t have that forever so we need to install a good GM who can help with that. Marty’s not the guy based on his overall resume of 2018/2019 drafts and FAs.

Honestly, I think it very well might be. Or if it isn't already, it soon will be.

Matt Rhule's official title at Baylor was Head Coach. His unofficial title could have been Absolute Monarch. And he made no secret of the fact that if he was going to take an NFL head coaching job, he wanted the kind of power and control that guys like Bill Belichick have.

He's that kind of a control freak.

And frankly, I think there's plenty of evidence that David Tepper is more than willing to give him what he wants on that front. Hence, my belief that Rhule will choose the next GM. My  theory is that it will be Pat Stewart, but even if it's Marty, I think "figurehead" will be an appropriate title for him. Basically, whoever the GM is, the guy who's really pulling the strings is gonna be Matt Rhule.

The thing about guys with that much power? You gotta hope they're reeeeally good at what they do.

I guess we'll see.

Not sure many GMs would want to be subordinate to a college coach on his first season in the NFL. You are right that one of Matt Rhule's guys might be fine with that but I would think most GMs have a pretty big ego and would want to call the shots.

Pat Stewart's not a big ego guy. Nor is he a guy who's been waiting 20 years for his shot at being a GM.

He's a guy that you could credibly give a GM job to, but there are definitely more qualified candidates.

If he's Matt Rhule's guy though, that might be all you need to know.

I'm not a fan of the full power model, not at all.

But I'm prepared for it.

And yeah, it can work. But you need a really really phenomenal guy for that to happen.

Is Matt Rhule that kind of guy? Don't know.

There's a pretty good primer on that from Bugs already within this thread.

Meh. The  guy will be here for this year's draft and probably beyond as GM unless the team takes a massive nosedive.

Marty excels in first round draft picks and has a hit and miss record for the other rounds, like most GMs that remain employed in the league for more than four years. He also seems to be good at going out and getting the free agents that his coaches request of him. I think last season he went out and got the free agent "stars" on defense that Rivera was screaming for to save his job. He got the names, but we just didn't get any real production out of them, they were just a bunch of aging rock stars who just wanted to make the Carowinds/State Fair circuit playing lazy renditions of their greatest hits. Easy money.

Contracts here, well they are still up in the air in this rendition. Right now, the two that seem to get the most angst are the ones received by CMC and Shaq. Are they worth the money? I think they'll show out to be so but you have to also weigh it against other cap hits and cap inflation. Yes, the cap will probably shrink next season, but no one saw 2020 turning out like this, for the league or the world in general. Going into the off season, though, they knew that Luke was retiring and that Cam wasn't getting an extension (and that he'd most likely be cut). They also knew that they were going to jettison Trai 'Sleeping on the Job' Turner, and there was no way in hell they were going to offer new contracts to Gerald "Lemme fall on the Pile" McCoy or "They Call Me" Bruce Irvin. Mario was going  to be let go as he was showing his age and needed more green to keep him going. If the team managed to grab a couple of good, under the radar players to fill in at QB, OT, MLB, CB and back up RB for modest paychecks, then everything would balance out those big paychecks for CMC and Shaq, both of whom any incoming coach would want for their rebuilding project.

How did he do on getting those free agents? Teddy looks good (not lights out spectacular, but we can certainly win with Teddy), Russell Okung looked like a throwaway trade but he's appparently bought in with the coach and has played well when healthy. Rasul Douglas is probably our best CB right now after having been ditched by Philadelphia. Mike Davis has been a monster for cheap (and he was an early, early grab). I think the only glaring mistake has been Whitehead, but he wasn't a very expensive one and has a short contract to boot.

All of that left enough money in the pot for him to go out and get one of Matt Rhule's guys, Robby Anderson. I thought this was a mistake from the get-go -- $12 million for a guy the Jets (the frikkin' Jets) didn't want to keep? Boy, was I wrong. The guy has been outstanding -- Rhule knew his man and Hurney was able to pay him.

Look, the body of work just in this season warrants Hurney another year as the GM. Just look at what is actually happening, the results on the field, the tone of the team -- this isn't a bunch of miserable overpaid whiny Cowboys or a collection of the dejected, hopeless Jets or Lions. That's got to mean something... actually it has to mean quite a bit.

From what I can tell, your formula for somebody being good enough to warrant another year is basically us not being the worst team in the league.

Honestly, I see this about Hurney a lot. Most of the praise breaks down to "he's okay", "he's not terrible", "he's not the worst", "he's not that bad" or my personal favorite, "we might get somebody even worse!"

And I suppose if that's good enough for you, then by all means keep him.

Some of us want more than three winning seasons out of fourteen (with two of those coming on the heels of other GMs).

I would think Rhule needs someone with GM experience given his lack of experience in the NFL. It is one thing to be a coach since really the college game and pro game share many similar functions. But I would have serious doubts that Rhule could do both jobs or that Stewart wouldn't need some seasoning before he would be ready for a GM job where there is a big difference between college and the pros.

I would think so too. And there are potential candidates like that (Jeff Ireland, for example).

But I'm not so sure Matt Rhule thinks so.

Hopefully Tepper can make him happy and provide the GM support he needs. Sometimes what you want isnt always what you need.

Based on what I've read, I'm inclined to think Tepper would give Matt Rhule a gold plated toilet in his office if he asked for it.
